Bristolians have been struck down with the ‘worst sick bug ever’ that has been lasting up to three weeks for some people. Pupils have been off sick, with reports of entire classes being wiped out by the infection.
Norovirus is very common around this time of year. The winter vomiting bug can also cause diarrhoea. It is highly contagious so anyone who contracts the bug should stay off school for 48 hours.
The main symptoms of norovirus are: feeling sick (nausea), diarrhoea and being sick (vomiting). Some people also have a high temperature, headache and aching arms and legs.

Dozens of people have taken to Facebook to discuss the illness. One of Bristol Live’s followers said: “We had it last week and it wiped me out! It was horrendous! It picked us off one by one. Still don’t feel 100%!”
Another wrote: “My youngest had it a week ago and still not himself, waiting for rest of house to get it but nothing yet…”, while someone else commented: “My son has had this and it lasted three weeks.”
A fourth person said: “We had it and it’s the worst bug ever. One school needed a deep clean because of norovirus.”
How to treat norovirus yourself
According to the NHS, you can usually treat yourself or your child at home.
The most important thing is to rest and have lots of fluids to avoid dehydration. You will usually start to feel better in two to three days.
