Weather UK: Heavy snow forecast as Met Office issues ice warning

Snow and sleet are on the way next week as temperatures plunge and the Met Office issues a yellow warning.

The warning will begin at 4am on Monday and urges the public to take care that ice and snow are likely to affect roads and train services across Greater London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

The Met Office said that temperatures will drop to near zero as “a mix of sleet and snow showers” moves in.

A yellow cold-health alert remains for the North East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, East of England, South East of England and London for the next few days.

An amber cold-health alert for the North West of England, West Midlands, East Midlands and South West will be in place until Friday.

It came after the Environment Agency is warning more homes will be flooded in the next five days as overflowing rivers reach record high levels.

On Sunday morning, 192 flood warnings and 207 flood alerts were in place in England with one warning in Wales at Tendy as the forecast was largely dry but cold.

The agency said buildings “will flood and there will be travel disruption”, and local groundwater flooding is also possible in the South of England, Yorkshire and the Humber.

Yellow ice warning issued across South East

The Met Office has been issued as temperatures expected to plunge from 4am on Monday in the south east.

They said icy patches and wintry showers will affect some areas on Monday morning, leading to potentially slower journeys.

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected by ice, (and in a few places by snow), leading to longer journey times
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths, making accidents or injuries more likely

Environment Agency warns Sunday walkers to steer cleer of ‘crumbly’ river banks

The Environment Agency has issued a warning for walkers to stay away from treacherous river banks.

A post on X reads: “After a night of very cold weather and with a lot of water across the South East conditions are treacherous.

“If you’re taking a Sunday walk please be careful – river banks are crumbling and slippery. Let people know where you are and stay well clear of flood waters.”

More than 1,800 properties have already flooded after prolonged wet weather and intense rainfall with the impact of high water levels likely to continue over the coming days, particularly around the rivers Trent, Severn and Thames.

On Sunday morning, 192 flood warnings and 207 flood alerts were in place in England with one warning in Wales at Tendy as the forecast was largely dry but cold.

Rishi Sunak urged to ‘wake up and smell the floodwater’ by campaigner

Flood campaigner Mary Long-Dhonau, told Sky News that she believes the government has failed to prepare for rising rivers after it was revealed flood defence budgets were cut by as much as 40 per cent.

She asked Rishi Sunak to visit flooded areas after 1,800 homes were left “absolutely devastated”.

She said: “Having filthy, stinking flood water violate your home is absolutely awful. Your home is your castle and people naturally want to look after it.”

Plans to better protect 336,000 homes from flooding were cut by 40 per cent because of the huge rise in inflation, the National Audit Office (NAO) said in a report two months ago.

Now only 200,000 will get new flood protection by 2027, amid the cost of living crisis Byline Times reported.

Political row as PM urged to visit flood ravaged communities

Carol Vorderman has called on Rishi Sunak to visit flooded homes

She posted on X: “Where is Environment Sec Steve Barclay? It’s his actual job. Why hasn’t Rishi Sunak visited any flood hit areas?

“TORIES CUT PROTECTION BY 40% @NAOorguk found Tory commitment made in 2020 of protecting 336,000 homes from flooding by 2027 HAS BEEN CUT by 40% to 200,000 homes Flood protection schemes also cut by 25%”

Liberal Democrat spokeswoman for housing and communities Helen Morgan also called on Rishi Sunak to visit affected areas, saying: “The Prime Minister should see for himself the devastation caused by these floods.”

Mr Sunak is likely to be questioned about the Government’s response to flooding during his appearance on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.

The Government said on Saturday that flood-hit communities can apply for funding to help them through the “extreme challenges” brought about by the rains and strong winds.

Hundreds of flood warnings remain in place as rivers continue to swell

As of Sunday morning, 192 flood warnings and 207 flood alerts were in place in England as the forecast was largely dry but cold.

Katharine Smith, flood duty manager at the Environment Agency, said: “Significant river flooding impacts are still expected… over the next few days across parts of the River Thames in Oxfordshire as well as the River Trent near Nottingham, and the River Severn, including Gloucester.

“Environment Agency teams are out on the ground, working to minimise the impacts of flooding where possible by operating flood defences and clearing watercourses. So far, more than 45,000 properties have been protected in the last few days.

“We also urge people not to drive though flood water and follow advice of local emergency services on the roads – flood water is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car.”

Significant river flooding impacts are expected to continue until Monday in parts of the Midlands, Lincolnshire and on the River Thames, due to the recent prolonged wet weather and intense rainfall.

Parts of Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire have seen increased river levels over the past 24 hours, with areas of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire continuing to also be impacted.
