Shoppers are outraged by a ‘sick’ Christmas card being sold by Sainsburys, with some Britons vowing to not shop there again.
An X (formerly known as Twitter) user, who goes by @SarfEastCaff, shared a tweet last week that read ‘Hello @Sainsburys I know everyone’s sense of humour is different but I think this is the saddest, unkindest Xmas card I’ve ever seen’.
‘I wonder if you’ll sell lots of them’.
The card features an image of two pigs in the snow, with the text reading: ‘Don’t worry, I hear we’re getting some blankets.’
The post has been seen by over 3,000 people and vegans have flocked to the comments to agree that the card is ‘grim’ and ‘truly awful’.
The commenter, who originally spotted the card, later added: ‘I saw the card in Sainsburys and thought it was unkind, sad and not really very funny.
‘I’m not trying to get it banned. Just wanted to point out it’s not a funny, or very seasonal card.’
Another upset customer wrote ‘That’s awful shame on you, that is very offensive to vegetarians, vegans and basically animal lovers.’
Others chimed in with to brand the card ‘awful’ and ‘truly disgusting’.
It’s not just vegans that are offended by the joke – one X user replied: ‘I eat pork, but yeah. That’s incredibly bleak and sad.’
Another shocked customer said ‘my goodness it’s terrible,’ meanwhile someone else added ‘I shan’t be even shopping [there] now – they are obviously not a very trustworthy brand if someone thought this was a good idea’.
However, some people found the card funny, tweeting ‘It’s called Dark Humour, get over it. Will we be able to get pigs in blankets at the express stores in Newcastle @sainsburys’.
Someone else added ‘Brilliant card that, love it!,’ alongside laughing emojis.
One customer said ‘Sigh. Can’t be doing with this nonsense any longer. Simply, don’t buy it, and don’t worry Sainsburys won’t miss your trolley full’.
Commenting on the matter, a Sainsburys spokesperson said ‘We offer a wide range of festive cards and welcome customer feedback on this year’s designs’.
It comes after the supermarket giant released it’s Christmas advert for 2023, which asks the very important question of what Santa really eats for Christmas.
Starring Never Gonna Give You Up singer Rick Astley – and real life Sainsbury’s workers for the first time – the creative feature puts a fun twist on traditional ads.
Sainsburys aren’t the only retailer to use star power for their advert – Alison Hammond, Lisa Snowdon, Sophie Habboo and designer Zandra Rhodes feature in Debenhams Wonderland is Waiting Christmas advert.
