Urgent warning about ‘potentially fatal’ ketamine circulating in Manchester

An urgent warning has been issued about ‘potentially fatal’ ketamine that is currently circulating in Manchester.

The Manchester Drug Analysis and Knowledge Exchange (MANDRAKE) shared the warning on social media on Tuesday (June 4), saying that xylazine is present in samples of ketamine being sold across the region.

A number of tests carried out on different samples being sold as ketamine showed that xylazine was present. It is a potent sedative used by vets on large animals.

Specialists have now warned that the combination of ketamine and xylazine together can cause ‘extreme sedation’ and can be ‘potentially fatal’ if consumed. Xylazine is also an adulterant in heroin and a number of other drugs.

A post shared to X read: “Xylazine, analytically confirmed, by @MANDRAKE_LAB in samples of ketamine circulating in Manchester. Potentially fatal if consumed. Contact your local drug/medical service for advice and support. If unwell please seek medical attention.”

The Greater Manchester Drugs Early Warning System (GMDEWS) also issued a warning on Tuesday urging anyone considering taking the drug to start with a ‘small test dose’ and wait at least an hour before taking any more.
