Tributes paid to West Dunbartonshire teenager who died following ‘tragic accident’ in Lanzarote

Tributes have been paid to a teenager who lost his life in a “tragic accident” while on holiday in Lanzarote.

David Alexander, 18, died in hospital following an incident at the Galeon Playa Apart-Hotel on the Spanish island last week.

The teenager, from West Dunbartonshire, was on holiday with his family when the accident unfolded.

Jim McLaren, the head of Clydebank social inclusion charity Golden Friendships, described David as a “very popular young man”.

The online tribute read: “Hi everyone, this is a picture of one of our members of Golden Friendships. 18-year-old David Alexander.

“Sadly David lost his life in a tragic accident this week in Lanzarote. David was a very popular young man who loved being part of our club.

“His aunt Angela told me it was like a second home to him and brought him great friendship and happiness.

“On behalf of Golden Friendships we would like to offer our condolences to David’s family at this sad time.”

The City of Glasgow College also paid tribute to the teen, after he applied for a place on the NQ Computing: Games Development course.

A spokesperson said: “We are profoundly saddened by the awful news that David has passed away following an accident on holiday.

“We send our deepest condolences to David’s family and friends at this desperately sad time and our professional staff are on hand to provide wellbeing support to any of our students affected by this tragedy.”

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Lanzarote and are in contact with the local authorities.”
