People are being urged to avoid an area of Shiremoor due to a large fire

A1 southbound closed between J72 and J73
Highways England tweeted:
“The A1 southbound is now closed between J73 and J72 Swalwell for an emergency repairs to an infrastructure defect.
“Work is already under way on repairs but the road is likely to remain closed through the peak evening period. Allow extra journey time.”

Tailbacks and long delays on A1
The A1 Western Bypass southbound is closed, and there are long delays due to emergency repairs from J73 A694 Derwenthaugh Road (Blaydon / Consett Turn Off) to J72 B6317 Hexham Road (Swalwell junction).
There is congestion to the A1 J77. Entry slip road at this Junction (J73/A496) is also closed due to emergency repairs on this stretch.
