Ange Postecoglou has admitted that both Giovani Lo Celso and Ben Davies will miss this weekend’s trip to Manchester United in the Premier League. At the start of the season, the duo were very much considered fringe players but following an injury crisis that decimated the squad, they have become very valuable to Postecoglou.
Davies has not missed a minute of league action since the 2-1 defeat to Wolves which is where the absences of Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie began, through both injury and suspension.
While Maddison is still out from the ankle issue picked up against Chelsea in November, Van de Ven was back in the squad to face Burnley in the FA Cup last Friday. Given the game state, the Netherlands international remained an unused substitute, but with another full week of team training under his belt, a start at Old Trafford looks likely, especially given Postecoglou’s update on Davies.
“From the last game, Ben Davies came off with a hamstring issue. Probably looking for a month or so for him out,” the Spurs boss revealed when asked for the latest team news on Friday. Meanwhile, Romero is firmly pushing for a return this weekend after suffering a hamstring injury over the festive period having returned to training this week.
Tottenham signed Genoa defender Radu Dragusin this week ahead of Bayern Munich, however, the new signing featuring this Sunday appears unlikely with Postecoglou also clarifying Dragusin’s availability amid work permit concerns. On Romero, he said: “He’s just started training so fair to say it might be a bit quick this weekend.
“From what I’ve been told and it’s not my area, but from what I’ve been told we’re pretty confident he’ll be available for Sunday.” Alongside Maddison’s injury, fellow midfielders Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are unavailable with club captain Son Heung-min also away on international duty.

With Rodrigo Bentancur only just returning, Lo Celso has been required to play a fair amount of minutes in recent weeks and it now seems that has caught up with him. “Gio Lo Celso similarly [to Davies’ injury] – though harder to diagnose where he’s at at the moment,” Postecoglou said on his fitness after previously revealing he had felt some tightness in his hamstring last week. “We’ll send him for further tests on Monday to see exactly what the issue is. He’ll miss this weekend.”
Postecoglou later confirmed that Dane Scarlett will miss the game, also because of a hamstring issue, with his name added to the injury list that already includes Ivan Perisic and Alejo Veliz. Manor Solomon is another that is close to returning, but in the meantime new signing Timo Werner looks set for a lengthy run in the team.
