I can’t believe it’s almost the end of March. What an odd month it’s been. Winter has stubbornly refused to budge, bullying a fledgling spring into submission. It’s sunny out today and the snow is melting, but we have more in the forecast for Easter weekend. Then, the day after Easter it’s my least favorite day of the year: April Fool’s Day. It’s best to mostly just stay offline that day.

Of course, it was on April fool’s that I got my first (of two) Wordles in one guess. Because I guessed march thinking that if I were playing a Wordle style April Fool’s prank I’d pick the only other month with five letters that also happens to not be just a proper noun (April is only a proper noun, and therefore can’t be a Wordle answer).

Speaking of proper nouns, yesterday’s Wordle sure threw me for a loop!

Alright, Wordle time.

Wordle Analysis

I was so sure I had this on my third guess, only to have victory snatched away from me when the third box turned up grey. Ah well. C’est la vie! My opening guess was solid but not solid, if that makes sense. I had 196 words remaining and just one, lonely yellow ‘O’. Crane cut that to 11 and gave me two more yellows to work with. I juggled them around and picked major because of all the words I could think of, two had the letter ‘M’ in them (others like razor and tarot etc. didn’t share enough letters in common to narrow my choices down). Alas, it was the mayor and not the major that ended up today’s Wordle.

Competitive Wordle Score

I lose 1 point for the Bot getting this one in just three (crane / tyros / mayor — tyros? Really?) and get 0 points for guessing in four. -1 total. Sigh.

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word ‘mayor’ comes from the Old French ‘maire,’ meaning “head of a city or town government,” which itself comes from the Latin ‘maior,’ meaning “greater” or “superior.” This Latin term was used in the title ‘maior domus’ or ‘major domo,’ meaning “chief steward” of a noble house, reflecting a position of authority and oversight. Over time, ‘maior’ evolved into various forms in the Romance languages, eventually leading to the English ‘mayor.’ The role of a mayor as the leader of a city or municipal government reflects this historical sense of being a superior or chief official within a local jurisdiction.
