A burst water main in Newcastle has flooded a street and local businesses.
Emergency services have descended on Byker Bridge after a water main burst on Tuesday evening and resulted in the road being closed off by police. A jet of water could be seen spraying up into the air from around 6pm onwards as firefighters attempted to bring the situation under control.
The incident has resulted in water seeping into the nearby Tanners Arms pub and the AquaPursuits Marine Training Centre. Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there had been a burst water main at Byker Bridge and that they sent two appliances to the street, along with officers who are assisting Northumbria Police. It is understood the force has closed off the street.
Amir Mousavivour, 68, who has run AquaPursuits for around 15 years, told ChronicleLive that he does not know the full extend of the damage caused to his business, but said water had leaked into the Tanners Arms pub next door. He also said a nearby hairdressers has also been impacted.
Amir said: “The situation has not improved yet as [the fire brigade] cannot find the stopper. The whole place is flooded but my shop is OK, I put the shutters down as there was water going into the pub next door. The pub was shut for a while.
“My shop is OK at the moment. At the front of the shop, the ground was all lifted, so we don’t know the extent of the damage outside yet. The shop itself is all full of mud. A lot of mud came up first before the water.”
Amir says he was teaching online at around 6pm when he became aware of the burst main and then closed up immediately. He added that he is not sure how long his business will have to shut.
