It’s no secret that many of us will be looking for some well deserved fun in the sun at the moment to escape the cold snap in the UK. We’ve seen it all from high-speed winds to even sleet and snow as of late, so you would certainly be forgiven for dreaming of sipping sangria on exotic sands.
If you’re thinking about booking up imminently, then make sure you check out SkyScanner first, as the flight finder has some seriously slashes prices on flights at the moment – including flights to the Cypriot city of Paphos for just £25. And yes, you did read that right.
A one-way flight to Paphos through Ryanair will set you back just £25 if you choose to travel in March, and while it leaves you with the task of sorting accommodation and finding flights back home, the price of the plane ticket alone could be enough to seal the deal for you.
But what is there to do in Paphos? Here, Chronicle Live breaks down the Brit-favoured holiday hotspot.
Explore the archaeology
Paphos is home to the Tomb of the Kings – a UNESCO World Heritage site packed with an array of history. The underground tombs – dating as far back as 4BC – are carved from solid rock, and are thought to house late Paphitic aristocrats and high officials. From frescoed walls to Doric columns – there’s so much to see at the Tomb of the Kings.
Theres also the Paphos Archaeological Park just down the road, with sites and monuments dating back to prehistoric times and through the Middle Ages. Among the most significant remains discovered at the site so far are four large and elaborate Roman villas in the House of Dionysos, the House of Aion, the House of Theseus and the House of Orpheus.
Make the most of the sea and sand
As Paphos plays host to the longest coastline of Cyprus, there are an abundance of beaches to make the most of. From the deep lagoons of the Municipal Beach to the rocky coves of St George, the delightful dunes of the Vardas to the shimmering sands of the Sodap, there’s plenty for everyone in Paphos.
Feast on fantastic foods
You may have heard of Dr Michael Mosley praising a the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet recently, but the food in Cyprus is living proof that healthy food doesn’t have to be boring and bland. Why not grab some authentic halloumi, some sublime souvlakia, some outer-worldly koupepia or some luscious lokmardes?
Explore the old town
Whether you’re after a romantic bite to eat with your significant other, or a day of exploring in the sun – Paphos old town has everything you could want from a Mediterranean trip away. Dubbed one of the most charming places to explore, the old town plays host to a number of traditional Cypriot eateries, vast historical structures, traditional markets and cute shops alike.
Sea the sunset at Aphrodite’s Rock –
After a fun day out, taking in everything Paphos has to offer, the last thing you’ll want to do is head up to Aphrodite’s Rock to watch the stunning sunset. A local myth cites that anyone who swims around the rock will be blessed with eternal beauty, but others may well prefer to admire the serene skies as they set across Cyprus.
