Stoke City 0 Ipswich Town 0 live – Reaction from Steven Schumacher as 10 men earn draw

Stoke City are back at the bet365 Stadium to start the new year with a Championship match against Ipswich Town.

Stoke return to headquarters following a Boxing Day win at Birmingham City and Friday night draw with Watford for what will be Steven Schumacher’s second home match as new head coach. His side head into this game with a five-match mini unbeaten run but knowing they need to turn more draws into wins in the second half of the season.

Ben Wilmot has made his return from a knee injury but Schumacher is without Lynden Gooch (calf), Josh Laurent (ankle) and Mehdi Leris (concussion) while Tyrese Campbell and Enda Stevens remain on the comeback trail. This will be Junior Tchamadeu’s last match before he flies to Ivory Coast to represent Cameroon in the African Cup of Nations.

Ipswich arrive in the Potteries on the back of home draws with Leicester and QPR but Kieran McKenna’s squad has been rocked by a sickness bug, infecting Wes Burns and Nathan Broadhead among others. Former Port Vale midfielder Sam Morsy, however, returns after suspension.

Well done Stoke

Stoke had to dig in with 10 men but fight for a point without letting Ipswich have a clear chance.

Stoke fans: “You’re not fit to referee.”

It’s an interesting debate. If Thompson did ask for a booking, he’s stupid too. But it wasn’t very well managed and poor consistency from a bad crop of referees.

Full-time

Bramall found an extra 50 seconds from somewhere but Stoke see it out.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

A rugby tackle from Harness on Gayle. No booking and no full-time whistle.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Baker was wiped out by a late tackle after making a clearance but Bramall was watching the ball and shrugs his shoulders.

Ipswich on the attack in last few seconds.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Lewis Baker urges the Stoke fans up and starts a big, rolling chant of Oh When The Reds.

Yellow card

Harry Clarke wipes out Johnson and goes into the book.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Super play from Hoever down the left and it’s a lovely cross dropping at Dwight Gayle’s feet. Gayle can’t read it, can’t get a touch and stumbles as it bounces past him. That was a big chance.

Applause for Ipswich fan Anne Austin

Applause around the stadium in honour of lifelong Ipswich fan Anne Austin, who died at the age of 81 during their game against QPR at Portman Road on Friday.

Stoke double sub

Junho and Mmaee off, Johnson and Gayle on.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Big celebrations as Bramall gives Stoke a free-kick for handball.

Schumacher and his coaching staff are all up on the sidelines screaming and gesturing to their players.

Stoke substitution

Vidigal replaced by Wilmot.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Stoke down to nine men because Vidigal was fouled but Bramall plays on to let Ipswich attack. Then he ignores another Ipswich foul. He’s lost the plot. He’s supposed to be a Premier League ref.

Ben Wilmot coming on for Stoke.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

What a bad piece of refereeing. It is such a big decision to send someone off and it looked like Bramall was handing out Christmas cards.

Red card: Jordan Thompson

So this is weird.

Stoke get the free-kick for a foul on Jordan Thompson – but Thompson is shown a second yellow. He’s off.

The replays don’t give any idea what stand-in ref Thomas Bramall was thinking. He walked over for a chat with Thompson as he was about to take the free-kick then pulled out the yellow and red.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Super play from Junho, holding off defenders with his skill before clipping in a cross with his left foot. Corner to Stoke.

Cleared as far as Burger to hook straight to Hladky from just outside the box.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Tchamadeu has to slide in to concede a corner as he chased back down the Stoke right. Burger defends at the near post but it’s another corner.

The rain is hammering down now. Rose is up to defend that corner.

Ipswich sub

Jackson off, Omari Hutchinson on.

Disallowed goal

Burger breaks behind the lines and runs through to score but the flag was up.

The replays show it was extremely tight and the linesman was too keen to flag. Burger had the beating of Tuanzebe initially although Tuanzebe then stopped when the whistle went.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Good play from Hoever and Junho. Junho gets in place to whip a low cross through the six-yard box that is begging to be touched home.

Ipswich breathe again but Baker then sends another tempter over from the left before they can really clear.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Chaplin spins and spanks a 25-yarder wide.

Stoke under the cosh.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Bonham saves from Wes Burns, driving in at the near post. McNally just about deals with the second phase.

Big save and a big few minutes for Stoke to see out here. Pressure building.

Attendance

23,121 with 2,570 in the away end

Yellow card

Lewis Baker in the book for a foul mid-way inside the Stoke half, wide on the right, on Luongo. It was a shove.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Ipswich keeping Stoke pinned in their own half and earn the first corner of the second half, claimed by Bonham.

Bonham releases Burger with a five-a-side roll-out and Burger releases Junho – but Junho can’t get around the massing defenders.

Half-time

Stoke are applauded off at the end of an intriguing half. It’s well poised, two sides giving it a lot without really testing the opposition keeper yet.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Ipswich corner to end the half.

Stoke deal with it.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Another zipper from Baker from the edge of the box. Pretty comfortable tip around the post from Hladky.

Baker’s corner can’t beat the first man.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Stoke fans aree furious at ref Bramall. Ipswich take a quick free-kick before Stoke are set but screw it up, Burger pounces and takes control… but then the whistle goes because the Ipswich player who was fouled was still grounded.

“You don’t know what you’re doing,” the home fans tell the ref.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Good strength and pace from McNally to hold off Jackson as Ipswich counter.

But that bit of play was all about the expert control and quick feet of Bae Junho, who has moved to the right wing while Vidigal goes left. Junho pretty much scooped the ball to himself to get around his man on the half-way line… before a quick one-two with Burger gave the ball away.

A metaphor for the game really, some flashes but we’re still waiting for the main course.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Bad luck Lewis Baker. He gets the ball from Thompson coming onto his right foot on the edge of the area, slips onto his left and shoots towards the far, bottom left corner. Saved by Hladky.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Another corner to Stoke as Tuanzebe leaps to get his head on a long diagonal from Tchamadeu.

Baker delivers and McNally jumps back to head high into the south stand.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Corner to Ipswich as Burns’s cross is deflected out.

The cross is high and hits Conor Chaplin’s boot almost with back spin as it comes down. Bonham can grab it.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Just before that Morsy booking, Broadhead had been well placed in the Stoke box and Michael Rose needed to recover ground quickly to stop the shot.

Yellow card

Sam Morsy in the book for a cynical pull on Lewis Baker, who had skipped past him into the Ipswich half.

Referee substitution

James Bell looks like he’s pulled a hamstring. “You’re not fit to referee,” rings around the stadium.

He’s going to be replaced by fourth official Thomas Bramall.

Bramall (South Yorkshire) has been flitting between the Championship and Premier League this season and oversaw Wolves vs Everton on Saturday.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Vidigal has had a tough afternoon so far. He tries to break the line to create an option for Burger but he’s offside. And replays show he’s about 20 yards off.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

A bit of quick play sees Kayden Jackson release Wes Burns through the middlee and Bonham has to be quick off his line to deal with it.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

A couple of times Stoke have got the ball back in great positions but not had that Nick Powell-knowhow of how to make it count. Tchamadeu robs it high up but then Vidigal can’t control to cross.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Hladky is getting some pantomime treatment whenever the ball goes near him.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

The Stoke crowd loves that. Ipswich keepeer Hladky poses with the ball as if he’s Ederson, looking to keep possession – and he then spoons it straight out.

It’s cat and mouse in that final third and Ipswich look dangerous if they can get it through. They break and it’s a skittling 25-yard shot from Conor Chaplin, saved by Bonham.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Vidigal nicks the ball from Luongo on the edge of the Ipswich box following a throw by Tuanzebe and Mmaee pounces to leather a volley on target. Well saved and a couple more corners in succession for Stoke.

The corners are played short again and the second is from Thompson to Burger and on to Baker, rolled back kindly about 25 yard out. Baker runs onto the ball and hits it towards Trentham Gardens.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

Match being played at a fair lick between both boxes.

Junho earns another corner as he tries running at Tuanzebe. It’s played short by Baker to Thompson and he gets it back before crossing straight to the keeper.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

A poor short pass from Baker to Thompson puts Stoke under pressure and Tchamadeu ultimately has to hold off a challenge from Harry Clarke at the back post from a threatening right wing cross.

Stoke 0 Ipswich 0

That was booking number seven for Jordan Thompson in the Championship. Three more earns a two-game ban.

Yellow card

Jordan Thompson in the book for that. It was a messy tackle on Kayden Jackson, who is rapid. Ipswich were in their own half but there was a lot of open space to attack.
