SPFL release statement on Rangers and Celtic away fan ‘zero allocations’ after latest Old Firm fallout

THE SPFL have issued their reaction to the latest instalment of the row over away fans at Old Firm matches.

SunSport told you exclusively this week how Celtic and Rangers have had another fall-out over derby day tickets.

Celtic wrote to Rangers insisting they will NOT give away briefs for the Sunday, September 1 clash at Parkhead.

They made their decision after behind-the-scenes talks with police and Glasgow council chiefs.

Rangers then issued a statement to insist that they “were taking all steps towards fulfilling that agreement” – but would be giving the Hoops no away allocation for the corresponding fixture at Ibrox in January.

The Gers, of course, are playing at Hampden and have only been able to offer a tentative potential return date of September 28 at the earliest, to their home stadium.

Back in March an agreement was reached to allow a five per-cent away allocation at each venue starting this campaign.

And now the SPFL have issued a statement to say that they had reached an agreement on the matter, and that away allocations would return to ‘around 5%’ of respective stadium capacity.

“Following recent media coverage around the issue of away tickets for matches between Rangers and Celtic, the SPFL has spoken with both clubs and can confirm it has been agreed between all three parties that:

  • the September 2024 and January 2025 William Hill Premiership matches between Rangers and Celtic will take place with a zero allocation for away supporters
  • Thereafter, Rangers and Celtic will provide ticket allocations of around 5% of respective stadium capacity for away supporters, for SPFL matches between the two clubs. This remains subject to all necessary requirements being satisfied at both Ibrox and Celtic Park.

An SPFL spokesperson said: “The presence of away fans is a vital ingredient of the passion, drama and excitement that is the hallmark of the William Hill Premiership.

“We are pleased that Rangers and Celtic are committed to achieving the return of away supporters to their derby matches as soon as possible.”

Assuming 5% of both stadium capacities are given over to opposing fans, Rangers will eventually have 3,000 tickets on Old Firm day at Celtic Park, with the Hoops getting 2,540 at Ibrox.
