Sian Doyle, former S4C chief executive, ‘found unresponsive by husband after taking overdose’

Former S4C chief executive Sian Doyle has been rushed to hospital after an overdose. Her husband has released a devastating, shocking statement after finding his wife unresponsive during the night.

In the statement, which we have confirmed has been released with Mrs Doyle’s knowledge, her husband Rob said: “This morning my wife, Sian Doyle, was rushed to hospital. She had taken an overdose during the night and was unresponsive when I tried to wake her.”

A report released by the S4C board on Wednesday included evidence it had taken from people at S4C who had been highly critical of her leadership. The report was written by law firm Capital Law after being commissioned by S4C chair Rhodri Williams in May.

But Mr Doyle said: “The person represented in yesterday’s supposedly ‘independent’ report was unrecognisable from the woman I’ve loved for the past 37 years, or the woman her friends and former colleagues know.”

He described the report as amounting to “an assassination of her character” and as the “last straw” which led to his wife being “torn apart in the media after an exceptional 30-year international career”. He added: “Sian was so proud to have been asked to come out of retirement to lead an organisation that, as a young girl, she campaigned to set up. But that pride turned into frustration, and then to disappointment, fear, and finally despair.”

Mr Doyle said he had “watched in horror and disbelief” as events unfolded over recent months and concluded: “I am now insisting that the privacy of my wife and my family is respected so that she can, hopefully, recover and we can get on with our lives. We won’t be making any further comment.”
