Shadwell Street police incident live as officers involved in three-hour cordon

Police have sealed off part of a Birmingham road amid an ongoing incident this afternoon. Uniformed officers are on scene in Shadwell Street.

Images taken at around 12.30pm today, July 8, showed uniformed police officers and a marked police car manning the area. A blue and white police cordon has been placed across a section of the road, near to Princip Street, to block public access.




West Midlands Police said it was called to Shadwell Street shortly before 11am. The force said officers are “working to resolve the incident” and a small cordon has been erected in the meantime.

The tape stretches across the front of the William Booth Centre, a Salvation Army support service to help those struggling with homelessness in the city.

Man taken to City Hospital

The man who sparked concerns while on the roof of William Booth Centre has been safely brought down an assessed, say WMAS. In a full statement from the service, they said he was taken to City Hospital following the incident.

A spokesman for the service said:

We were called to reports of concern for a patient’s welfare on William Boothe Lane at 10.50am, one ambulance and a Hazardous Area Response Team paramedic attended the scene.

On arrival we discovered one patient, a man. He was brought to safety and assessed, before being taken to City Hospital.

‘Matter resolved safely’, say police

Police have confirmed the man has safely come down from the roof of William Booth Centre and has been referred for support.

A spokesman for the force said:

The man has now come down and the matter resolved safely.

He has now been referred to mental health professionals.

Police concerns after ‘man on homeless centre roof’

Police had been called to Shadwell Street this morning after “concerns for the welfare of a man on the roof” of William Booth Centre, we can confirm.

Officers erected a small cordon as they worked to resolve the incident. Fortunately, it’s understood the incident has now been safely resolved.

Emergency services, including police officers and an ambulance, could be seen working at the back of William Booth Lane this afternoon. We are now waiting to hear from West Midlands Ambulance Service to understand if there have been any injuries, or if the ambulance was on scene as a precuation.

Incident response unit arrives

An incident response unit from West Midlands Ambulance Service has just arrived on scene as police continue to try to resolve the ongoing incident. The cordon remains in place across part of Shadwell Street.

Three-hour police cordon

It’s understood uniformed police have now been on scene for three hours. Officers were alerted to the incident in Shadwell Street at 10.50am this morning.

A cordon was erected across William Booth Centre, a homeless support service, and remains in place now.

‘Large police presence’

Police have sealed off the end of William Booth Lane and a larger section of Shadwell Street, says our on-scene reporter. There is a large police presence in Shadwell Street, outside William Booth Centre and the cordon runs for about 15 metres.

Incident at homeless support centre

The incident is ongoing at the William Booth Centre on Shadwell Street, near where the road meets Princip Street. Police were called to the street at 10.50am and have since cordoned off a small section of the road in front of the homeless support centre.

The Salvation Army centre provides first stage accommodation and support for people struggling with homelessness. We have contacted staff at the centre for more information.

Police ‘working to resolve incident’

Police have confirmed they were called to Shadwell Street, which joins to Princip Street, shortly before 11am today (Monday, July 8). West Midlands Police said they had cordoned off part of the road while they “work to resolve the incident.”

In a statement, a spokesman for the force said:

A small cordon is in place as we work to resolve the incident.

We have a reporter on his way to the scene.
