Roddenberry Foundation Announces Launch of Prize for Science/Tech Ventures

The Los Angeles-based Roddenberry Foundation announced Wednesday a biennial $1.5 million prize to support emerging science and technology ventures focused on improving human lives and protecting the environment.

Designed to advance the vision of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, The Roddenberry Prize will present $1 million to the winner, and $100,000 awards to five finalists, to recognize ventures that are “leading us towards a better, healthier, and more prosperous future,” according to the foundation.

“We are excited to support early-stage ventures that hold the potential for radical change,” Rod Roddenberry, Gene’s son, said in a statement. “My father envisioned a future without hunger, poverty or war. Through The Roddenberry Prize we seek to find and support organizations who are making that vision a reality.”
