Red Devils give up lead twice to draw with Spurs in frantic Premier League clash

Ange speaks

Ange Postecoglou was full of praise for his Tottenham side, despite being disappointed to only leave with one point.

He told BBC’s Match of the Day: “You always want to win games but I couldn’t be prouder of the players. They have had to deal with a fair bit this week and to put on a performance like that, I thought the way we handled the game was outstanding.

“They are a good team on the counter. For the most part we dealt with it OK. Our response to both of their goals was outstanding and I thought in the second half we were the better side and deserved to win.

“We’ve had a rough week with some illness in the camp. Credit to the players they kept going to the end. It was an outstanding effort.”

Micky reacts

Micky van de Ven has cooled injury concerns by insisting it was just cramp he had late on – which is fair given his length of time off.

He was pleased to be back and how his side played.

He told Sky Sports: “I think we played a good game, we had a lot of the ball. Man United are dangerous on the counter attacks. I think it was a good game from our side.

“It’s great to be back and I enjoyed it. I had cramp at the end. It was just cramp and the cold. You saw the intensity of the game. I didn’t play for two and a half months.”

“We have to be aware of the counter attack. We knew they would wait for our mistakes because we want to play.”

Right back at it

Pedro Porro was key at both ends for Tottenham.

His set pieces were dangerous all afternoon, and his attacking play in an inverted role in the second half was where Spurs got a lot of joy.

He’s turning into a key player for the way Ange Postecoglou wants to play.

Also, the amount of corners he took has been highlighted in the map!

Timo reacts

Timo Werner got 80 minutes under his belt on his Spurs debut – his first since getting 17 minutes midway through December in Germany.

He picked up a crucial assist for the Bentancut equaliser.

On his appearance, Werner told Sky Sports: “First of all, I’m very happy to be back. It’s a lot of fun to play here. You see today it’s the best league with the tempo and the game. I enjoyed it very much. One point but in the next few days I can train more with the guys and it can go better.”

“To play for a new club in this stadium against United, you’re always a bit nervous. You try to enjoy it.

“What I see and what the coaches and players did for me in the last few days was incredible. I was included straight away. I want to play in our stadium.”

“You always want to score as the offensive player but if you can assist, that is also good.”

Speaking of stats

Here’s the numbers that summed this game up.

Spurs with many more efforts on goal and on target.

They enjoyed far more possession and completed MORE THAN DOUBLE the passes that United did.

21 corners in total – 13 for Spurs – showed the attacking intent.

But the numbers right at the top are what count.

Comeback

As much as a point might not have been as much as Spurs deserved, this stat shows how hard they’ve found it here in the past.

OptaJoe tweeted: “Tottenham have gone 1-0 down in 25 of their 32 Premier League games at Old Trafford, the most one side has conceded the first goal away to another in the competition.

“Spurs have lost 22 of the previous 24 such occasions (W1 D1). Familiar.”

That D1 can now be changed to a D2.
