Rangers 3 Dundee 1 LIVE reaction as Cyriel Dessers sparks comeback win at Ibrox

Rangers have cut the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership to five points after a 3-1 victory over Dundee at Ibrox.

In a game dominated by more VAR controversy, the visitors hit the front through Amadou Bakayoko after just five minutes to stun the home supporters, after Rangers failed to clear their lines at a corner.

Cyriel Dessers was handed the start in place of the injured Danilo and the oft-maligned striker finished smartly on 20 minutes to equalise. Rangers were then ahead six minutes later as James Tavernier dispatched a penalty right into the corner, sending Trevor Carson the wrong way.

Dundee players and management were unhappy with the award of the penalty, which came as a result of a VAR intervention, with Abdallah Sima’s shirt being pulled with force. Sima himself then grabbed his fourth goal in his last three matches as he bulleted home a header from a corner with 11 minutes to play in the first half.

More VAR controversy was to come deep into first-half stoppage time as Jose Cifuentes saw his yellow card for a high challenge on Bakayoko upgraded to a red after a VAR-led review, with Kevin Clancy electing to overturn his initial decision after watching it back on the monitor.

Philippe Clement cut a frustrated figure on the touchline for much of the match, with a mixture of refereeing decisions and occasional sloppy passing from some of his charges contributing to his anger levels and it came as no surprise when he was himself booked in the second half.

Tony Docherty will maybe be a bit disappointed at not being able to capitalise on his side’s man advantage in the second half, but there were some encouraging signs from their display.

Clement rage

Rangers Manager Phillipe Clement shouts at Referee Kevin Clancy after he shows him a yellow card(Image: SNS Group)

Philippe Clement says he lost his cool for a brief few moments in Rangers’ 3-1 in over Dundee – but he’s still left confused by a no-goal call by Kevin Clancy despite offering the whistler his apologies.

All four goals were scored in a first half dominated by controversial refereeing calls. Amadou Bakayoko put the away side ahead before Cyriel Dessers levelled up. A James Tavernier penalty was netted but the call by VAR to send Clancy to the monitor has sparked debate after a coming together in the box between Abdallah Sima and Aaron Donnelly.

Jose Cifuentes was also sent off following a VAR check for a late foul on Bakayoko, but Todd Cantwell’s effort beyond Dundee goalkeeper Trevor Carson has really irked Clement. The playmaker was in the process of scoring as Clancy blew his whistle for a foul prior to it hitting the net, and it earned the Belgian a yellow card over three seconds of red mist. But while he has offered up the hand of apology, he still doesn’t get why play wasn’t allowed to continue.

Clement pre-match

Referee Kevin Clancy (L) and Rangers manager Philippe Clement (Image: SNS Group)

Philippe Clement was speaking to club media in the build-up to the game and offered his reasoning behind the five changes made for this afternoon’s game.

Maybe the most unexpected change is that Connor is not starting but like I’ve said, 12 games in 37 days it’s impossible to play every game 90 minutes and play at your top game. So you have to take that into account.

Johnny is also doing a good job in training games so to give Connor a breather in between these important games.

Mols in attendance

Former Rangers striker Michael Mols has spoken of his recent health scare that saw him have surgery to remove a brain tumour and the Dutchman is continuing his recovery with a trip to see his old side in action.
