Popular pub restaurant near Royal Derby Hospital to close its doors and only serve hotel guests

A well-known restaurant that sits opposite Royal Derby Hospital is set to close and transform into a Premier Inn restaurant. Hospitality chain, Whitbread, confirmed that one of its Derby sites, The Mallard – Beefeater, will be undergoing major changes starting this week.

The restaurant, which is a popular site for those visiting the hospital, serves a wide range of budget food from full-English breakfasts to burgers, steaks and salads. A spokesperson for Whitbread, which owns various hospitality chains including Premier Inn, Beefeater, Brewers Fayre and Table Table, reads: “After many years serving the community we can confirm that The Mallard is closing its doors (last day of operation is July 4).

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their support over the years and our amazing team members.” Beefeater also sent a message to its Reward Club members confirming the changes, stating that the restaurant will only serve those staying in the hotel from Friday, July 5.

The message to Reward Club members read: “We are writing to let you know that we’ve announced plans to make changes at some of our restaurants. Unfortunately, The Mallard Beefeater in Derby will be changing to a Premier Inn restaurant and will only service those staying in the hotel after July 5. We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause.”

The restaurant boasts a four-star rating on TripAdvisor from more than 1,000 reviews and is ranked as the 27th most-popular restaurant in Derby. One reviewer, following a trip back in June, wrote: “Really impressed with the food and excellent service by Jade. Good portion sizes also. Will definitely come again. Thanks!”

Another commenter wasn’t so pleased, writing: “Only rating this place one star cause I have to otherwise it would’ve been zero. Would not recommend one bit. If you want a nice meal after staying in the premier inn, I would suggest going to Aldi instead, which is not that far from there.”
