Person dies after crash on major Welsh road

A driver has died after a crash on the A55 in Conwy. There have been long delays all day on the A55 eastbound and queueing traffic due to crash investigation work which has shut the Penmaenbach Tunnel Eastbound between junction 16 Conway Road and junction 17 at the A547 with congestion to junction 15A (Penmaenmawr).

In a statement North Wales Police now confirmed a person has died. A spokesman for the force said: “We were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a white Hyundai on the A55 Eastbound at Dwygyfylchi at 5.49am this morning (Saturday, October 28).

“The single occupant of the vehicle was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin and the coroner have been informed, and an investigation is ongoing into the incident. We’re appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to contact us on 101, quoting incident number A172376.”

A large diversion has been put in place spanning for almost 40 miles. Traffic Wales is asking motorists to follow the signed diversion via the A55, J11, A5 and A470 before re-joining at J19.

Routes through Dwygyfylchi and Capelulo are also slow as drivers divert around closure. Traffic control measures have been implemented on the westbound carriageway with traffic being temporarily held intermittently at J18.
