Palmer, Tavares, Godden – Coventry City injury and absentee latest ahead of Southampton

Mark Robins is tantalisingly close to having a fully fit Coventry City squad from which to choose as he works his players towards Wednesday night’s CBS Arena clash with Southampton.

The Sky Blues boss is just one player away from a clean bill of health in his senior squad, with striker Fabio Tavares the only remaining player yet to return to the matchday mix. The young striker came through an hour with the Under-21s 3-1 defeat by Peterborough United at the Alan Higgs Centre recently.

Kasey Palmer, meanwhile, was absent for 12 games with an abductor tear but returned to the squad to face Wayne Rooney’s stuttering Blues side on Friday night, albeit an unused substitute on the night. Tavares meanwhile, who has been out for almost a year with a ruptured Achilles, is expected to need a little longer before he’s ready for first team action.

“They have been out for a long time, in Fabio’s case it has been nearly 12 months,” said Robins. “Kasey has been out for over two months and you look at him getting match minutes, yes, absolutely. It’s slightly different to Fabio, he’s got to get his timing back. He’s got to get his rhythm back and get that confidence, you know, to go and play. But he looks better and better all the time when he’s training.

“And in the same way for Kasey in terms of his training, it just gives him that confidence that everything’s fine with his body. He’s still working his way towards his match sharpness, match fitness and then obviously match availability.”

The only other senior absentee from Friday’s 2-0 victory over Birmingham was striker Matty Godden, whose wife gave birth to their second child on Friday. But he was due back in training this week and expected to be available to return for this Wednesday’s squad to face the Saints.
