Newcastle United has reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for the permanent transfer of midfielder Elliot Anderson, according to The Athletic.
This transfer is part of Newcastle’s broader strategy to comply with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) before the Sunday, June 30 deadline.
The Magpies didn’t want to part ways with the academy product and were seemingly reluctant to let the 21-year-old wunderkind go but they were forced to do it to ensure financial compliance and avoid getting deducted points from the EPL next season.
Anderson, who has made 55 appearances for Newcastle since his debut in 2021, is willing to accept the move and won’t create any trouble or issues between now and the end of the month, helping NUFC deal with their financial woes. A medical is expected to follow ahead of completing the proposed transfer and should take place at some point through Sunday.
Anderson was loaned out to Bristol Rovers in the 2021-22 season and he helped the team with key performances in League Two before returning to Newcastle. Last season, he played 26 times for the Magpies, starting in 10 matches but suffering a back injury that sidelined him from a good chunk of the campaign.
The deal to sell Anderson follows the recent agreement for Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh’s transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion for approximately £33 million, which is also happening to aid financial issues.
These sales should be enough for Newcastle to solve their problems and abide by the PSR rules ahead of the next league year starting on July 1.
The club had been in talks with multiple teams to offload players and raise the necessary funds to avoid potential penalties, including a points deduction for the next season, and after a few ups and downs in negotiations—mostly with Everton and Lyon—it looks like the lads finally found a way to agree to deals and avoid trouble next year.
In addition to Anderson and Minteh, discussions included winger Anthony Elanga potentially heading to Newcastle in a separate deal to be completed later during the summer transfer window so it belongs to the next football year in terms of its impact on NUFC’s accounts.
