North East flooding LIVE: Disruption as roads closed and village high street submerged

Heavy rain overnight has led to flooding around the North East with some major roads closed.




Front Street in Lanchester, County Durham, has been left submerged in water with emergency services reportedly on the scene.

A number of flood alerts remain in place on Sunday.

Salon owner speaks of damages to business

Mary Hall who is the owner of New Image in Lanchester has detailed the damages to her business through flooding.

Lanchester update

The main road is now open as the flooding has now gone, and businesses are beginning their cleanup.

What should I do?

For the flood alerts, the Government says: “Monitor local water levels and weather conditions. Avoid using low lying footpaths or entering areas prone to flooding. Start acting on your flood plan if you have one.”

For flood warnings, the Government, says: “Please take action to protect yourself and your property and monitor local weather and river conditions. Avoid contact with, walking or driving through flood water. Consider activating any property flood protection products you may have.”

The Government has issued 14 flood alerts and warnings across the North East:

  • Flood alert for Tweed estuary – Flooding is possible in this area.
  • Flood alert for Northumberland coast – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for River Till and tributaries – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for Upper River Coquet – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for River Rede – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for River Tyne – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for Tyne Estuary- Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for River Derwent, Team, Don and estuarine tributaries- Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for Wear Estuary – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for Tyne and Wear coast – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for Lower River Wear – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for River Gaunless – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood alert for River Skerne – Flooding is possible in this area.

  • Flood warning for North Sea at Berwick-Upon-Tweed and Tweedmouth – Flooding is expected in this area.

  • Flood warning for North Sea at Roker, Sunderland – Flooding is expected in this area.

B6344 in both directions closed due to flooding between the A697 (Longframlington) and the Longframlington Turn Off (Pauperhaugh). Ongoing since October 20.

A691 in both directions just passable due to flooding between B6296 Station Road (Lanchester) and Langley Lane (Langley Park).

Lane closed on A167(M) Southbound

One lane closed due to flooding on A167(M) Southbound from the Gosforth turn off to the Jesmond turn off.

Floods all across the North East

A number of roads are currently closed across the North East due to heavy flooding over night. Parts of Newcastle, Northumberland and County Durham are affected with a number of roads closed completely in both directions.
