1.53 Newcastle – BetUK All-Weather Championships Marathon Handicap (2m)
A proper stamina test is in store here and SPARTAN ARMY is fancied to confirm his recent Lingfield form with Prydwen. Spartan Army shot clear off the final bend but he looked like he might get swallowed up by the runner-up, only to find a bit more when he needed it for his third straight win. A 4lb rise might not stop him adding to his tally.
Selection: Spartan Army @ 3/1 with Betfred
2.05 Lingfield – BetUK All-Weather Vase Middle Distance Handicap
There isn’t likely to be any hanging around here and that should suit INSPIRITUS for Roger Varian and James Doyle. The Sea The Stars gelding has run well in all three starts in handicaps, winning well at Wolverhampton in January and finishing strongly to be second over course and distance this month. He’s 2lb higher here and can find more off a solid pace.
Selection: Inspiritus @ 8/1 with Betfred
2.25 Newcastle – BetMGM All-Weather 3-Year-Old Championships Handicap (6f)
Irish winners on All-Weather Finals Day aren’t plentiful, but Andrew Slattery’s TARSUS looks a key player here. He has been allotted a mark of 92 after winning twice at Dundalk this season, with his latest success coming at the expense of course specialist Harry’s Bar in a six-furlong conditions race. He’s not exposed at this trip.
Selection: Tarsus @ 9/1 with Betfred
2.40 Lingfield – BetMGM All-Weather Vase Mile Handicap (1m)
Bottom weight SHOOT TO KILL is an interesting raider on just his third start since joining Ado McGuinness. He has run well twice at Dundalk over this trip and is a three-time Lingfield winner, twice over a mile, while the booking of Cian MacRedmond takes off a valuable 5lb in the plate.
Selection: Shoot To Kill @ 14/1 with Betfred
3.00 Newcastle – BetMGM Fillies’ and Mares’ Championships Handicap (7f)
The claims of Nine Tenths and Shades Of Summer are clear to see, but JUST A SPARK is preferred for the Rod Millman team. She won three on the spin at Wolverhampton and Kempton to kick-start 2024 and her latest Southwell run is easy to forgive. She’s still on a workable mark and Oisin Murphy remains on board as they tackle this extra furlong.
Selection: Just A Spark @ 10/1 with Betfred
3.15 Lingfield – BetUK All-Weather Vase Marathon Handicap (1m 7½f)
Recent efforts in defeat from Charlie Johnston’s Lope De Vega colt TENERIFE SUNSHINE have hinted that he could be well worth a try at this increased distance and he looks to be a lively contender in the hands of James Doyle, although the claims of in-form Tradesman are obvious.
Selection: Tenerife Sunshine @ 10/1 with Betfred
3.35 Newcastle – BetUK All-Weather Sprint Handicap (6f)
Albasheer had clear daylight when beating BILLYJOH into second over five furlongs here a fortnight ago but the winner had a perfect seam into the lead, while Frederick Larson had to weave through rivals before closing late on. It certainly would have got interesting over an extra furlong and Mick Appleby’s charge is better off on these terms and not without hope of turning that result around.
Selection: Billyjoh @ 14/1 with Betfred
3.50 Lingfield – BetUK All-Weather Vase Sprint Handicap (6f)
Trainer Hugo Palmer has a strong hand here, with PRINCE OF ZENDA and How Impressive both likely sorts. The former, a gelding by Kingman, has won over course and distance and at Newcastle on his last two starts and the booking of Shane Foley is a plus. He may not have reached his ceiling just yet.
Selection: Prince Of Zenda @ 5/1 with Betfred
4.10 Newcastle – BetUK All-Weather Easter Classic Middle Distance Handicap (1m 2f)
Simon and Ed Crisford’s Winter Oaks winner Oh So Grand is bidding for a four-timer and should go close, but Mick Appleby’s PENZANCE is already on a winning run of four. He won a hot handicap over course and distance on New Year’s Day, seeing off the re-opposing Storm Catcher, and impressed since then in a clear-cut success at Lingfield. The handicapper may not have got to him yet.
Selection: Penzance @ 7/2 with Betfred
4.40 Newcastle – BetMGM All-Weather Championships Mile Handicap (1m)
SYMBOL OF LIGHT missed a chunk of time after leaving Charlie Appleby but has four really promising all-weather runs on the board for Julie Camacho after a 518-day absence and wind surgery. He was given time to get over last summer’s comeback here and has been second on his two most recent starts when attempting to come from a long way back. He has form in his back catalogue when racing much more prominently and, if getting a handy position, could be a major player.
Selection: Symbol Of Light @ 13/2 with Betfred
