New Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Slimer toy revives classic 1984 design with gnarly details

With Slimer set to make his big screen return in next year’s sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, it’s evident from our first look at the Spud that the design has been made to closely replicate what’s seen in the original 1984 comedy that among the many gross-out highlights include a disgusting grimace and rolls of ectoplasmic fat.

As reported earlier this week, while not officially announced yet by toy manufacturer Hasbro, a new line of action figures based on the upcoming film has begun to arrive on store shelves, including an interactive Squash & Squeeze Slimer that, while clearly made with kids in mind, could be one of the best mass-produced incarnations of the gluttonous specter.

What makes this toy so special? Well, while fans have absolutely no shortage of Slimer collectibles to choose from, over the years, the majority, in some way, have taken creative liberties. This has included designs that mix and match features from the movie with the more child-friendly The Real Ghostbusters animated series or merely dialing back the grotesque, leaving the disgusting green blob looking, well, anything but disgusting.

For anyone who subscribes to the Ghostbuster News YouTube channel, you’ll know that I’ve been a pretty loud advocate of that original ’84 design, in particular his unsightly butt. Despite the endless amounts of gross-out toys in the market aimed at children, this is one area that, for some reason, has nearly always been omitted. Heck, even adult collectibles, from Halloween decorations to life-size replicas, the vast majority provide a rounded posterior but stop short, not including any of the gnarly details.

Now, I’m not sure if someone at Hasbro’s design team has been listening to my and other fans’ criticisms or if Sony has opted to remove Slimer’s apparent butt-cheek ban, but in these new out-of-the-box photos of the Squash & Squeeze Slimer sent in by @keymaster_art of fan franchise group the Austin Ghostbusters, the Class Five Full Roaming Vapor appears downright hideous. This includes his off-white teeth, yellow eyes, slightly misshapen torso, and, best yet, a massive rear end that, in what feels like the cherry on top, includes wrinkles and a boil.

In addition to the toy’s overall design, which arguably makes it a must-have for fans of all ages, the Squash & Squeeze Slimer comes packed with more than forty sounds activated through interactive play. For those on the hunt, let us also add that while these new toys have already been spotted at multiple independent collector shops, thus far, we’ve yet to hear of them turning up at any big box retailer, and while not confirmed, they could be connected to next month’s upcoming Ghostbusters toy launch from Hasbro, slated for January 14th.
