Deadly Earthquake in Nepal Claims Lives, Tremors Reach India

Nepal was struck by a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake on January 7, 2025, leaving devastation in its wake. The earthquake, which hit at 4:12 PM local time, caused extensive damage and claimed dozens of lives, while its tremors were felt across parts of northern India.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) identified the quake’s epicenter as near Pokhara, west of Kathmandu, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Shallow earthquakes are often more destructive, and this was no exception. Many buildings, particularly older and less resilient ones, were reduced to rubble, leaving families displaced and vulnerable.

Reports from BBC suggest that over 30 people have been confirmed dead, with hundreds more injured. Rural areas near the epicenter have borne the brunt of the destruction, with rescue efforts hindered by difficult terrain and ongoing aftershocks. Hospitals in Kathmandu and Pokhara are overwhelmed with patients, prompting calls for additional medical aid.

In India, tremors were reported across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Buildings in Delhi shook for nearly half a minute, causing alarm among residents. Fortunately, there have been no reports of fatalities or significant damage in India, though authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

Nepal’s government has mobilized military and disaster response teams to affected regions. Emergency shelters are being set up for those displaced by the quake, while international agencies, including the Red Cross, have pledged support. Neighboring India has also extended aid, dispatching rescue teams and relief materials to assist Nepal.

The Himalayan region is highly prone to seismic activity due to tectonic movements along the Indo-Eurasian plate boundary. Scientists have long warned of the region’s susceptibility to large earthquakes, and this latest event highlights the urgent need for robust disaster preparedness measures.

As Nepal grapples with this tragedy, international attention is focused on supporting the nation’s recovery efforts. Residents are being advised to remain cautious as aftershocks continue to pose risks in the affected areas.
