An Amazon delivery driver allegedly knocked off a man’s car wing mirror and “ran off with it”, leaving his mum stunned.
Last October, Gladys Bakken, 83, was enjoying a visit from her son, Peter, 60, who lives in Norway, when she said the bizarre incident happened outside her home in Norris Green.
Speaking to the ECHO, Gladys said: “As soon as it happened, the lad next door told us about it and showed us the video. I couldn’t believe it.”

The footage, captured on a CCTV camera, shows an Amazon delivery van driving past Peter’s car and apparently knocking off the wing mirror into the road. A few moments later, the video, which has been edited for brevity by the ECHO, shows somebody – assumed by Gladys and Peter to be the delivery driver – walking into the road to retrieve the mirror.
Peter joked: “She must have a collection of them. I understand they’re rushed these drivers, but she could have left a note.”
Gladys, a nan-of-three, said: “She just picked it up and took it with her. I’m fuming about it to be honest. Our Peter’s been ill and this is the last thing he needs.”
At a loss over what to do, Peter headed straight to the Amazon depot in Knowsley. There, he was reportedly told to contact customer services, but Peter said he “couldn’t make head nor tail” of the instructions.
In a hurry to catch his ferry to return home, he claims he “had no choice” but to drive without a wing mirror all the way to Hull from Norris Green. He said: “I had to drive the car with a trailer on the back and no wing mirror to Hull to get the ferry back to Norway. It was interesting to say the least.”
When he got to Norway, he was told it would cost £300 to replace the wing mirror, without counting the cost of labour.
Peter, who says he “isn’t very tech savvy”, got his friend to email Amazon about the situation, but wasn’t able to resolve it.
However, once the ECHO contacted Amazon, Peter received some positive news. The Amazon customer services department telephoned him last week to discuss the matter, and he is hopeful he will be compensated.
A spokesperson for Amazon said on Friday: “We have very high standards for the delivery service providers we work with. We’re looking into this and we’re in direct contact with the vehicle owner.”
