Moana has to be one of our all-time favourite Disney films, featuring some stellar songs, top notch casting and beautiful storytelling to boot. And soon, we’ll have a chance to say ‘Aloha’ to Moana, Maui and the rest of the Motunui gang again because it’s been announced that Moana 2 is in the works, and better still, there’s a 2024 release date for the film!
On 7 February, Walt Disney Company Chief executive Bob Iger announced the return of Moana in a statement:
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when ‘Moana 2’ comes to theatres this November.”
While plans for Moana 2 initially started as a TV series, apparently executives were so impressed that they turned it into a film.
Last year Dwayne Johnson announced that he would be producing a separate live action remake of Moana, but we have to admit we didn’t see this sequel film coming!
With the announcement we learnt a few key details about the new movie and what we can expect, so here’s everything we know so far about Moana 2, from cast to the confirmed release date.
Moana 2 plot
According to Disney, Moana 2 takes audiences on a new voyage with Moana, Maui and a “brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers”.
“After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
We are beyond excited!
Moana 2 cast
Though Disney is yet to confirm a cast for the second film, from the plot synopsis we can expect to see the return Auli’i Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as demigod Maui.
