Work to live or live to work? It is a question that has split the internet in two after a ‘middle class’ man documented his monotonous daily routine sparking a bitter existential debate about modern society.
TikTok creator @hubs.life, has created a stir over his video over his daily routine as a ‘middle-class man’ living in America.
The 29-year-old man’s routine has prompted a wave of horror from many online, with some declaring it to be: ‘literally the saddest thing I’ve seen in a very long time.’
In the 1:20 minute long clip, which was re-shared on X, the Dallas man begins his day by showing and getting dressed for his office job, where he works in insurance at a Fortune 500 company.
Once dressed, he prepares a protein shake to take on the commute to work, packs up his laptop and takes the trash out to the curb to be picked up and drives to the office, stopping at a donut shop on the way.
He says the drive is around 10 minutes and arrives at 7:45am, before settling in for a day of work.
After working for a couple of hours, he takes a break and goes to Chilli’s for lunch before going to a company picnic at 12pm.
He’s back at work by 1pm and has logged off by 4pm, stopping at the pet store on the way home to get some food for his dog Benny before arriving home at 4:30pm and getting changed out of his work clothes.
He takes his dog Benny to his mom’s house – which is says is his dog’s ‘happy place’ – at 5pm then drives home via a drive-thru.
While the creator, who is married with a baby on the way, seems content with his life, the ‘sad’ video sparked huge discourse online.
While some thought his office job and routine seemed fine, other’s declared it ’empty,; with someone posting it to X writing: ‘This is literally the saddest thing I’ve seen in a very long time.’
‘Dude is able to afford to eat out three meals a day, only 10 min commute to work and only spends 6hrs a day at his desk. Seems like he is winning,’ one X user pointed out.
‘He has a good job. Three meals a day. Nice house. Dog. Why sad?’ questioned another.
‘This looks like a man living a fulfilled life why can’t people be happy with simplicity,’ agreed someone else.
‘Office work ain’t my thing, but the dude has what appears to be a decent house in a decent neighborhood, a well-paying job, a happy dog, can afford to eat out whenever he wants, drives a nice vehicle, has a relationship with his mom, and is married,’ another user pointed out.
‘I’m not sure why that’s sad.’
‘People live in war-torn countries, and you think this is the saddest thing you’ve seen?’ another said incredulously.
Some others couldn’t believe that this man really lived this life.
‘Wow. This is the emptiest life without any real purpose I’ve seen in a long time,’ someone wrote in shock.
‘Dude is trapped in the Matrix,’ another declared.
The creator went viral in August last year after after one of his daily vlogs went viral, again dividing the internet with his routine.
Thousands dubbed his routine ‘more terrifying than anything else imaginable’, while Hub himself claims that ‘every day is a blessing’.
Hub shared a video of his ‘monotonous’ schedule that begins with him arriving at work a little before 7am and then spending most of his morning checking emails and ‘knocking out small items’.
He takes his lunch break at the same time everyday – 11am – and eats at his desk before getting back to work.
The 28-year-old usually spends some time working out and lifting weights in his backyard after getting home then takes Benny for a walk.
After walking his pup, he showers and cooks himself dinner before watching some television to wind down.
Many were ‘horrified’ by the man’s unchanging routine and shared their opinion on the 9-5 lifestyle
