Day 5 – we made it! – of Royal Ascot 2024 on ITV Racing gets under way here with the Listed Chesham Stakes for juveniles over seven furlongs. Godolphin have to start getting jiggy soon so I will side with AGE OF GOLD for William Buick and Charlie Appleby. The Frankel colt who cost 625,000 euros looked good but green on debut at Yaarmouth when winning well and will have learnt a lot.
Now the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes over a mile and a half. St Leger hero CONTINUOUS had Desert Hero and Middle Earth well beaten off when landing that Classic at Doncaster and a fifth-place finish in the Arc suggests he is a terrific middle distance prospect this term. The big negative is this is first time out. But I suspect he will just be too classy for Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien.
The final Group 1 of the week in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes over six furlongs. It’s very easy to argue that ART POWER is better over five furlongs but this is the first time he has had fast ground in this contest and he might just bounce off it. The Tim Easterby runner landed the Palace of Holyroodhouse Handicap here in 2020, and was then third in this contest in 2023, eighth in 2022 and 12th last year. He did bang in the Group 1 Champions Sprint here though when scoring at 40-1 at the end of 2023 and he’s the type of horse who can land a shock. The field is a little smaller than is sometimes the case and he might just take a bit of catching if on a going day. David Allan is on top at long odds.
A fascinating renewal of the Group 3 Jersey Stakes for three-year-olds over seven furlongs. EBEN SHADDAD has long been my Nap of the week and he’ll be at fine each-way odds here for John & Thady Gosden and Kieran Shoemark. My hope was in front of Haatem in the Dewhurst and then chased home that old and re-opposing rival in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket at the start of the season. That, though, was over a mile and this drop back in distance will be ideal for a horse who ran well but then weakened close home when seventh in the French 2000 Guineas. He will love getting back on fast ground.
Here’s a competitive handicap in the Wokingham over six furlongs. MUMS TIPPLE was fourth in this contest last year off a mark of 100 and can go off 96 this time for Richard Hannon and Sean Levey. I suspect that means my selection has a cracking each-way chance and after five runs this term he can’t get any fitter. A fourth at Newmarket two runs ago off 97 when keeping on well behind Desert Cop suggests the seven-year-old still has plenty of ability.
Here’s the Golden Gates Stakes Handicap for three-year-olds over a mile and a quarter. PORTSMOUTH ran too free when beaten at Epsom last time but from a low draw can get tucked in and has every chance of a place at least for Oisin Murphy and Andrew Balding. He was a non runner when the ground was good to firm back at Salisbury in 2023 but it might well be that he will love these faster conditions. Getting him settled will be the big key.
Royal Ascot 2024 ends with the Queen Alexandra Stakes over nearly two and three-quarter miles. Dawn Rising had RUN FOR OSCAR back in third when landing this last year and there is every chance he can go in again. But the latter was a little unlucky and he might just reverse the form with a clear run from off the pace. Of course the Charles Byrnes runner is now nine so he won’t be getting any better. But he’s a former Cesarewitch winner and this is his trip. Also, you don’t have to worry whether he’s being laid out for something else!!!
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
