Man’s body found live as police seal off area outside city centre church

A man’s body was tragically found outside a city centre church this morning, December 4. He was discovered at around 8.50am near Jewellery Quarter’s St Paul’s Church.


His death was not being treated as suspicious, police said. Officers sealed off the edge of the church for several hours. A private ambulance arrived at the scene at around 10.30am.



The cordon was removed around ten minutes later. A report will be prepared for the coroner, police added.

BREAKING: Man’s body found

A man’s body was found outside St Paul’s Square in Jewellery Quarter this morning, December 4.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “The body of a man was discovered in St Paul’s Square, Birmingham, at just before 8.50am today (4 December). The death is not believed to be suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner.”

Cordon lifted after ambulance arrived

Our reporter at the scene told us the private ambulance arrived and left the scene in under ten minutes. Police removed the cordon almost immediately afterwards.

By 11am the scene had cleared.

Cordon lifted – here’s what we know so far

Our reporter tells us the cordon has been lifted at the scene. Some officers remained talking to dog walkers.

We are working to find out the nature of the incident this morning, and will bring that update to you when we have it. We do know that a private ambulance departed the scene a short time ago, and public access to one side of St Paul’s Church was closed off by a cordon.

One eyewitness told BirminghamLive there were “lots of police and ambulances.” Access has now been restored in the square, and cordon has been lifted.

A private ambulance has arrived in the square. Paramedics were seen taking a stretcher out of the back of the vehicle. Officers are now holding up white sheets while appearing to load the ambulance.

Emergency services contacted

The nature of the incident is unclear at this time, but we have contacted West Midlands Police and West Midlands Ambulance for an update and will bring that to you as soon as we get it.

Area sealed off

Our reporter at the scene told us “only one side” of St Paul’s Church was sealed off. St Paul’s is open for public worship every Sunday, 10.30am – 11.30am and open for individual private prayer every Monday to Friday 11am – 2pm.

It is a key focal point in the city square.
