Manchester United have confirmed their move for Newcastle chief Dan Ashworth after a breakthrough in talks.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe had been targeting a move for the former Brighton man since his own arrival at Old Trafford. But he was left frustrated by the Magpies’ lofty demands.

Ashworth was put on gardening leave as talks continued. A deal was finally agreed between Man United and Newcastle earlier this week, and Ashworth’s move has now been formalised.

A joint statement from both clubs on Monday read: “Newcastle United and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the immediate release of Dan Ashworth from his contractual obligations at Newcastle United. The terms of this agreement remain confidential between the clubs. Newcastle United thanks Dan for his services and wishes him well for the future.”

Ashworth’s switch to Old Trafford is the latest backroom appointment that Ratcliffe has made in his six months with the Red Devils. He also swooped for Omar Berrada from Manchester City, who has now been appointed as Man United’s new CEO.

Jason Wilcox also completed a move to Man United having previously been with Southampton. Ratcliffe also made a major call regarding Erik ten Hag’s position.

The Dutchman was under severe scrutiny following a dismal campaign last season. The INEOS owner conducted a lengthy review into Ten Hag’s job which included speaking to potential replacements.
