Man led into room and told ‘there are tissues there’ as test results read out

A man has said he wants others to look beyond his diagnosis as he no longer lives “in the shadows”.

Marc Roberts, who lives by Sefton Park, was diagnosed with HIV when he was 26 and living in Salford. Marc said he showed no symptoms – which often can be flu-like – but rather got tested as he had a “gut feeling”.

In this case, Marc’s intuition was right and his diagnosis subsequently came at an already dark time in life for the 41-year-old. Marc, originally from Wales, told the ECHO: “I was taken into a little room and I knew it was bad news when they were taking me in. The councillor told me there were tissues on the table but I questioned why I would need tissues. I wasn’t upset because I didn’t care about life at that point anyway, I had already given up on it. It made me just want to drink. I knew nothing about HIV, I barely knew the word HIV – I only knew the word AIDS.

“I knew how cruel people can be to those with HIV and since I’ve been shocked throughout my life by people’s reactions, but it’s hypocritical. People wear the ribbon – the universal symbol for HIV – but don’t want it (HIV) around them or in their lives and it all stems from a lack of education and fear.”

Growing up in a small Welsh town in the 80s, Marc’s knowledge of the blood-borne virus went as far as what the right-wing media and government led him to believe. Similar to many of that era, he was under the impression that AIDS – which occurs when HIV is untreated – was the gay plague and viewed as a death sentence.

Now, with education and hindsight, Marc said: “It doesn’t phase me anymore, I don’t worry about it. I don’t think about it daily or throughout the year because, for me, I don’t see it as an illness. I take two tablets a day and I’m undetectable, I’ve come out of the shadows and don’t sit at home and feel alone anymore.
