A man died after going into cardiac arrest at New Year’s party in Brazil moments after he jumped into a waterfall area and was electrocuted.
Friends told the Distrito Federal Civil Police that Marco Bomtempo, 33, wanted to cool off when he was shocked inside the fountain after the party ended at club Bothanic in Brasília during the early hours of Monday.
‘He said he was going to jump when he left the event,’ João Cunha said, according to Brazilian news outlet G1.
Cunha recalled watching Bomtempo removing his shirt and handing it over to one of the girls he attended the party with when he went into the fountain.
He tried to rescue him and was also electrocuted.
‘As he jumped, I saw that he didn’t say anything else. I ran back and jumped,’ Cunha said. ‘I started to get shocked along with him.’
Another person attempted to get them out of the cascade, but was only able to help Cunha.
The Distrito Federal Fire Department said that Bomtempo went into cardiac arrest and firefighters attempted to resuscitate him for 50 before he was pronounced dead on the scene.
Bothanic’s management said in a statement that the venue was rented out for the New Year’s party on Sunday and that it was not directly involved with the event.
The club remained closed Monday.
‘The venue deeply regrets what happened, expresses deep regret for the death and offers solidarity to the family of young Marco Túlio Bomtepo,’ Bothanic said.
The event organizers lamented Bomtempo’s death and said it has provided information to investigators.
‘Firstly, we offer all our solidarity and condolences to Marco Túlio Bomtempo’s family,’ the said. ‘… it should also be noted that the event promptly provided all necessary first aid.’
