The London Stadium roof is due to have solar membrane fitted later this year.
Last year Mace, the international consultancy and construction company, won a contract for project management support for the installation and procurement of a supplier for the solar technology.
Project delivery will see the installation of a 6,000-7,000-square-metre solar membrane to generate more than 1 million kWh of renewable energy every year. Mace claims equates to 10% of the Stadium’s current electricity usage and represents a saving of up to £350,000 a year in energy costs.
The City-Hall-funded innovation will also drive positive environmental change, resulting in a reduction of 270 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
The £4m grant for the scheme is being awarded from City Hall’s Green Finance Fund – a £500m pot launched in June as part of London Climate Action Week.
Procurement for a supplier for the technology supported by Mace has completed with installation due during the June to November 2024 period according to papers within a May LLDC board report.
