Liverpool Council warning as green bin collection suspended

Liverpool City Council has confirmed its green bin collection service has paused for the winter.

The local council said the service will resume in February 2024 meaning residents with green waste will have to take it to their local recycling centre or compost it themselves. The green bins are used for compostable waste such as leaves, vegetable peelings, egg shells and toilet roll tubes.

Residents who have a green bin have to pay for it to be collected. The annual fee for a green bin to be emptied once a fortnight is £40. However, the council only collects green bins between the last week of February and the last week of November.

The council’s full post on X, formerly known as Twitter, said: “Our green bin collection service has now paused for the winter. The service will resume again in February 2024. You can continue to recycle any green waste at your local recycling centre, or compost it.”

The council has encouraged people to compost their waste because it helps reduce the amount of waste sent to an incinerator and, as a result, decreases CO2 emissions.

The council advised there are multiple community composting schemes across the city where residents have come together to help support the authority’s climate emergency response. Alternatively people can buy a home compost and do it themselves.
