Live updates as multiple city centre streets cordoned off by police

Parts of Liverpool city centre have been cordoned off due to a police incident.

Officers have put tape up on parts of various city centre streets including Paradise Street, Church Street, Lord Street, Whitechapel, Sir Thomas Street and Peter Street.




A number of stores including McDonald’s, Next and River Island fall within the cordon.

The ECHO has contacted Merseyside police for more information about the nature of the incident, we’ll be posting the latest updates below.

Man fighting for life after multiple stabbings in city centre

A man is fighting for his life after a stabbing in Liverpool city centre.

Three people were stabbed in an incident involving a large group of men. Detectives found one man, in his 20s, with stab wounds near to the McDonald’s at the junction of Church Street and Whitechapel.

They gave the victim medical assistance before he was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition. Two other men have also self-presented at hospital with stab wounds.

One of the men, in his 20s, had a stab wound to the back and the second, also in his 20s, had a stab wound to the head. Officers believe that the stabbing is linked to an earlier incident involving a large group of men on Victoria Street.

Arriva statement

A spokesperson for Arriva North West said: “Due to a Police Incident, Sir Thomas St in the City Centre is currently closed between Victoria St and Whitechapel. Services which would usually use Sir Thomas St will board on Victoria St opposite the Shankly Hotel. Please allow extra time for your journey.”

The cordon blocks main city centre streets

The cordon in place blocks some of the main city centre streets including Lord Street, Church Street, Paradise Street and Whitechapel.

ECHO reporter Olivia Williams is at the scene this morning. She spoke to a woman who was unable to get the bus from her usual stop at Sir Thomas Street.

She also said that a bin lorry has not been able to pass through its usual route.

Buses disrupted

Due to the ongoing police incident in the city centre, Merseytravel has warned that buses are unable to serve a number of stops near Sir Thomas Street.

A spokesperson said:”Arriva North West and Stagecoach – all cross river and Bootle services 52, 52A, 54, 55, 56 and 58 will pick up from Victoria Street opposite the Shankly Hotel.”

Incident happened early hours today

It is believed that the incident happened at around 5.30am today.

A witness who saw the cordon being put in place said there was around 25 police cars and three ambulances on Lord Street, near the McDonald’s.

Officers then worked to close the surrounding streets and roads.

Cordon likely to be in place “all day”

A police officer has said that the cordon is likely to be “all day.”

Officers appear to be focusing their efforts at the junction between Paradise Street, Church Street, Lord Street and Whitechapel (outside McDonald’s).

Footage she has sent in shows that the cordon extends from Peter Street , past the Met Quarter and towards McDonalds on Paradise Street.

Church Street into Lord Street is also closed by police from TJ Hughes to the TUI travel agents.

The cordon covers parts of Paradise Street, Lord Street ,Church Street, Whitechapel, Sir Thomas Street and Peter Street.

Shops including Next, River Island and Boots are within the cordon, as well as McDonalds.
