LIVE: Devon roads shut and red flood alerts in place as barrage of rain continues

Several roads in Devon are shut and red flood alerts have been issued as a barrage of rain continues. Heavy rain started in the county last night, and a Met Office rain warning is in place until 7pm today.

Many roads have been closed throughout Thursday as a result of the rain. In Axminster, the A358 (Chard Road) has been flooded after the River Axe burst its banks. A photo taken at the Smallridge junction, just north of Axminster, shows water running down the road.

Members of the public have been warned by the fire service to avoid any non-essential journeys. In a post on Facebook, a fire service spokesperson said: “Current situation at Weycroft. Junction to Smallridge is currently just accessible however please avoid any non-essential journeys as the water level is still rising.”

It comes after several flood warnings and alerts have been issued across Devon today. Currently, there are three flood warnings and 14 flood alerts, which have been issued by GOV.UK across Devon and some surrounding areas – this includes the River Axe area.
