Liam is now heading to Cardiff for the second night of the tour on Monday, and fans are sure to be excited at the prospect of hearing these early Oasis songs, some of which are being sung live by Liam for the first time.
He had promised those in Sheffield would “get their minds blown” at the gig and based on the reaction from the thousands there, they were not disappointed. Liam previously said of the tour: “The most important album of the ’90s bar none. I wouldn’t be anywhere without it and neither would you, so lets celebrate together.”
Fans of Oasis have been hoping the band – including songwriter Noel Gallagher – would reunite this year for the 30th anniversary of debut album Definitely Maybe. But it hasn’t happened and instead Noel’s brother Liam is playing songs from the album. Noel left Oasis in August 2009, saying he could no longer work with his younger brother Liam following a series of fights. The Gallagher brothers’ last live gig together was in Paris in 2009.
Formed in Manchester in 1991, Oasis had eight number one singles including Some Might Say and Don’t Look Back In Anger. At their peak they played two legendary gigs at Knebworth to 250,000 fans. The debut album Definitely Maybe was an immediate critical and commercial success in the United Kingdom after being released on August 29, 1994. It went onto sell 8.5 million copies.
Before the album was released in August 1994 the band initially struggled to record an LP which captured their on stage energy. Liam Gallagher, Noel Gallagher, Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs, Paul McGuigan and Tony McCarroll decamped to Monnow Valley studios on the Welsh borders of Monmouthshire.
But at the time, the initial recordings felt overly technical and polished, failing to capture the essence of the band. The sessions were ultimately scrapped, and the band moved to the remote confines of Sawmills Studios in Cornwall to re-record the album. With Owen Morris joining to complete the definitive mixes, the iconic Definitely Maybe was born.
The singles released from the album were Supersonic, Shakermaker, Live Forever and Cigarettes & Alcohol.
- Liam Gallagher’s Definitely Maybe tour is completely sold out. The 30th Anniversary Edition of Definitely Maybe is out on August 30 on Big Brother Records featuring an unreleased demo and unheard outtakes.
