Jason Momoa Cast as Lobo in ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’

Jason Momoa, renowned for his role as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), is set to portray the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in the upcoming film “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” This casting marks a significant shift from his previous character, aligning with Momoa’s long-expressed interest in bringing Lobo to life.

In a 2023 interview, Momoa shared his enthusiasm for the character, stating, “Lobo was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo.” He confirmed his new role by posting on Instagram with the caption, “They called,” signaling that DC had approached him for this opportunity.

“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is scheduled to begin production on January 13, 2025, with a theatrical release planned for June 26, 2026. The film will feature Milly Alcock, known for her work in “House of the Dragon,” as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. Craig Gillespie, acclaimed for directing “I, Tonya,” is set to helm the project.

The storyline is expected to draw inspiration from theries “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. It contrasts the experiences of Supergirl, who was raised on a fragment of Krypton and witnessed the demise of her people, with those of her cousin, Superman, who grew up on Earth.

Lobo, a character introduced by DC Comics, is known for his role as a galactic bounty hunter. His live-action debut occurred in the television series “Krypton,” portrayed by Emmett J. Scanlan. Momoa’s portrayal in the upcoming film will mark Lobo’s first appearance in a DC Universe (DCU) movie.

This casting decision is part of a broader reimagining of the DCU, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Their vision includes integrating well-known characters with lesser-known ones to create a cohesive and engaging universe for audiences.
