Powerful Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Advisory in Southwestern Japan

Southwestern Japan experienced a powerful earthquake on January 13, 2025, prompting a tsunami advisory across coastal regions. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported the earthquake as a magnitude 7.1 event, striking at 10:45 a.m. local time. The epicenter was located off the coast of Kagoshima Prefecture at a depth of 25 kilometers.

The quake caused strong tremors felt across Kyushu Island, with local authorities swiftly issuing a tsunami advisory for nearby coastal areas. According to NHK World, the advisory warned of potential waves up to one meter high, urging residents to stay away from the shoreline.

Early reports indicate no major structural damage or injuries, though some minor incidents, including broken windows and toppled shelves, were noted in Kagoshima City. Trains in the region temporarily halted operations as a safety measure, and power outages were reported in several towns.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) corroborated the JMA’s findings and highlighted the region’s vulnerability due to its position near the Philippine Sea Plate. CNN noted that this is the second significant seismic event in the area within a month, raising concerns about heightened tectonic activity.

Japanese authorities activated their disaster response teams, with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida addressing the nation and urging calm. “We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local governments to ensure public safety,” he stated in a press briefing.

Residents near coastal areas were seen evacuating to higher ground as precautionary measures were implemented. In the town of Makurazaki, fishing boats were quickly secured as waves began to rise slightly above normal levels.

The tsunami advisory was lifted after two hours, with no significant wave activity recorded. Fox Weather emphasized the importance of such advisories in ensuring public safety, even in cases where the actual impact is minimal.

Seismologists continue to analyze the earthquake’s aftershocks, warning residents to remain vigilant. Japan’s robust earthquake preparedness systems and early warning networks once again demonstrated their efficiency in protecting lives.
