Manchester United will be handed a welcome financial boost thanks to Jadon Sancho reaching the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund.
Dortmund claimed a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night in the second leg of their semi-final, with Mats Hummels scoring the only goal of the contest. The Bundesliga club had already held a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and progressed to the final with a 2-0 aggregate victory, where they will meet either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium.
Sancho starred for Dortmund in the first-leg win over PSG and will now be looking ahead to the Champions League final next month. During the January transfer window, United loaned Sancho to Dortmund – the club they originally signed him from for £73million in 2021 – for the second half of the 2023/24 season.

The first half of the campaign saw Sancho make just three appearances for United. The winger was banished from the first team last September following a public fallout with Erik ten Hag, with Sancho claiming he had been made a “scapegoat”. Since moving to Dortmund, the 24-year-old has been a key figure in Edin Terzic’s side, and the club’s progression to the Champions League final will now hand United a welcome financial windfall.
As part of the loan deal, United received a €3.5m (£3m) sum up front from Dortmund, with the possibility of a further €4m (£3.4m) in add-ons. MEN Sport recently reported that a United source said a “significant” bonus has since been activated in Sancho’s loan agreement after Dortmund beat Atletico Madrid to reach the Champions League semi-finals.
Thanks to beating PSG, it is understood Dortmund’s progression to the Champions League final will earn United a further payment from the loan agreement, with United now owed more money as a result of the Bundesliga club reaching their first European Cup final since 2013 – which was also hosted at Wembley.
Sancho has now played in all six of Dortmund’s knockout games in the Champions League since his loan move from United. He has scored three goals with two assists in all competitions for the German club, including one in the last-16 second leg against PSV Eindhoven in March.
Before the second leg in Paris, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl revealed talks will be held with United over the possibility of re-signing Sancho.
