McDonald’s fans have been left gobsmacked after learning the key ingredient in Sweet ‘n’ Sour is a type of fruit.
Radio hosts from Melbourne breakfast show Jase and Lauren revealed the true flavour on air – and the realisation ‘ruined’ the taste for many.
In a resurfaced TikTok video, Lauren Phillips spoilt her co-host Jason Hawkins with nuggets and his favourite sauce.
But he wasn’t too thrilled after being told the popular dip is made with apricot.
‘I hate apricot.. I can taste the apricot now,’ Jase said and threw the half-eaten nugget away.
‘Have you ever thought about what Sweet ‘n Sour sauce is actually flavoured?’ Hannah asked while her co-host dug into the chicken nuggets covered in sauce.
At first Jase was excited to be eating nuggets and dubbed it as a ‘good day’.
But after he took his first bite, Hannah said: ‘Would you believe it is actually.. apricot flavour?’
Jase paused before sharing his hate for apricots and tossed the nugget aside.
The video swiftly caught the attention of thousands who seemed just as shocked as Jase.
‘Omg my mum use to make apricot chicken,’ one wrote, another said: ‘Apricot goes so well with chicken that makes so much sense.’
A third added: ‘Finding out about Caesar salad dressing destroyed my love of it.’
The official McDonald’s Australia TikTok account also commented and made a suggestion.
‘Hear me out, try dipping your Soft Serve in Sweet and Sour Sauce,’ the account wrote.
However, others claim they’ve known about the true flavour of the sauce for years.
‘How do people not know this?’ one asked.
‘Sweet n Sour is essentially Apricot jam and white vinegar,’ another claimed.
Other ingredients in Sweet ‘n Sour sauce include peach puree, salt, xanthan gum, garlic powder, cellulose gum, dried chili peppers, onion powder, caramel colour, extractives of paprika and more.
