‘It’s a proper Scouse drink, a real Scouse tradition’: Searching for lost Aussie Whites

Yates’s Aussie Whites has been a fixture behind the bar at many Merseyside pubs, bars and clubs for decades.

Not like a normal white wine, the drink is fortified and contains grape brandy, giving it a punchy strong and fruity taste. The 17.5% drop could be enjoyed on its own or as part of a Blob – the drink which lends its name to Great Charlotte Street pub The Blob Shop.

It is a real Scouse tradition – a rite of passage for generations of drinkers.

However, it appears that Aussie Whites’ days are numbered. A concerned reader sent an email to the ECHO earlier this week to say that he couldn’t find the drink anywhere on Merseyside – and it appears that he is not alone.

A thread on the Liverpool Reddit page suggested that many people in and around the city were struggling to find the drink, with one suggesting it had been discontinued. The thread said that places still serving it were running on stockpiled bottles.

Halewood Artisanal Spirits bought the Aussie Whites brand from Yates’ for £1m in 2003. A phone call to its customer service team confirmed the sad news.
