Is Fortnite down? Surprise update early patch notes as server downtime confirmed

Fortnite servers are going down for the final time in 2023, just before Epic Games goes on its annual Christmas vacation

Fortnite will be experiencing downtime for the final time in 2023, with Epic Games launching a surprise pre-Christmas update(Epic Games)

The final Fortnite update before Epic Games’ Christmas break drops today, here’s when the servers come back online and a round-up of the early patch notes.

Winterfest 2023 is well and truly underway in Fortnite after launching last week, with the event being included alongside the introduction of Lego Fortnite, Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival in the last big update on December 7. That update saw Fortnite go down for maintenance, in what we thought would be the last time in 2023. But, Epic Games’ Fortnite servers will be going down again today before the company’s Christmas vacation, with the battle royale title set to receive a surprise gameplay update before the year is out.

Here’s when Fortnite server downtime begins and when they’ll come back online.

Fortnite server downtime confirmed

Epic has confirmed via a post on its @FortniteStatus Twitter account that Fortnite server downtime begins today at 9am GMT / 4am EST / 1pm PST, with matchmaking set to be disabled 30 minutes beforehand. So be sure to wrap up what you’re doing in-game before then. This Fortnite server downtime follows the title’s standard downtime and update pattern, with major game updates for Epic’s battle royale game usually taking place on a Tuesday.

When Fortnite servers go down, they’re usually offline for around four hours, so we expect them to be back up and running at around 1pm GMT / 8am EST / 5am PST today, so players should be able to jump back into Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 1 after just a few hours at most.

Fortnite update early patch notes

We won’t have the confirmed patch notes until the Fortnite downtime is over, however, if we dig into the Fortnite Trello board, we can piece some early Fortnite patch notes together. The following issues are listed as “fixed in a future game update” so we expect these changes to be live in-game once Fortnite downtime is over:

  • Players may get stuck in build mode
  • Shuffle Loadout option is missing
  • The Lights on Omegarok’s second outfit style can disconnect from the outfit

  • Ranker’s Tags, Competitor’s Skyblades, and Competitor’s Time Brella may show an incorrect Rank

  • Ranked Solo Zero Build activation schedule is 1 hour behind of what is stated in the game

  • Characters are temporarily not able to be hired

  • “Joining from the lobby” may appear to be Disabled (Lego Fortnite)

  • Occasionally after skipping the Rocket Racing trailer, screen turns black and is unresponsive (Rocket Racing)

  • Ranked quests show incomplete after reaching the next rank (Rocket Racing)

And as always, our trusted Fortnite leakers, such as @ShiinaBR and @HYPEX, have been posting about what players can expect for this update, with both accounts stating pretty categorically that Epic will be making some movement changes to Fortnite in this patch.

As these are just early patch notes and unconfirmed leaks right now, there might be a few surprises in today’s update, so we’ll make sure to keep you up to date with the full Fortnite patch notes as and when they drop.
