‘I’m nearly 42 – two foods packed with niacin gave me glass-like skin my 40s’

Plant-based foods are revered by the health-conscious, but animal sources offer unparalleled benefits to the hair and skin.

Adding these anti-inflammatory sources to the diet can do more than protect the body against oxidative stress.

The smaller, oily fish at the bottom of the food chain have long been known as some of the best superfoods for hair and health, as have nutrient-dense products like beef liver.

Jennifer Myers, a 41-year-old influencer and skincare enthusiast, chooses sardines and beef liver for their exceptional benefits for hair health.

In a YouTube clip, she explained: “All the foods I consume in total contribute to my overall health, but I really wanted to highlight the two key nutrients I’ve been increasingly focused on supplying my body with.

“In the past six months, have made a major noticeable difference in the condition of my hair, skin and nails (I can both feel and see the difference).

“There are two key nutrients that I’ve been really supplying my body with intentionally. The first one is niacin.”

The B vitamin is an essential nutrient that acts as an antioxidant in the body, and Jennifer gets her dose through beef liver, which “is very high in vitamin A”.

“When I began eating grass-fed beef liver my whole life changed,” she said. “My skin got better, clearer, more glass-like, glowy if you will.

“The pre-formed vitamin A in the liver has really done a number on my skin, in a good way.

“I love it,” she declared, adding that a modest three-ounce portion consumed twice a month should suffice.

Beef liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet, according to medical platforms like WebMD.

“The other foods I eat are sardines,” noted Jennifer. She specifically purchases canned versions that come in spring water and like “to eat the bones and the skin for the calcium”.

Opting for canned sardines with the bones still intact will help you get a boost of 325 mg of calcium, playing a significant role in keeping hair healthy.

Along with calcium and an array of different vitamins, sardines contain several beneficial minerals like niacin.

Another canned food that has benefited Jennifer’s hair and skin is wild-eye sockeye salmon, which also comes with skin and bones.

Wild salmon, particularly sockeye, contains enough vitamin D to protect the skin against sun damage.

The ingredients also combat hair ageing thanks to their omega-3 acids and high levels of proteins.
