Manchester United and Liverpool collided for a pulsating 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Mohamed Salah had the final say from the penalty spot after goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo put United in control and, seemingly, heading towards victory over their bitter rivals. Luis Diaz had opened the scoring, with the Colombian making his mark from a corner in the first half.
It was a result which prevented Liverpool from returning to the Premier League summit – albeit on goal difference – while United have serious work to do to preserve their top-four push. Here, we take a closer look at the action and pick out three moments you might have missed during a high-octane 90 minutes;

‘Big Sam’ spotted alongside United figures
A meeting between United and Liverpool will always be the hottest ticket in town. Sir Jim Ratcliffe took his seat in the director’s box and was spotted with two other knights of the realm in Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Dave Brailsford. It was no surprise to see those three, but the emergence of an ex-England manager got people talking.
Sam Allardyce watched the action unfold next to Sir Alex – promoting one or two posts on social media – and they certainly had plenty to feast on with four goals, a penalty and some crunching tackles to boot.
Elliott goads United ‘villain’ after penalty
Aaron Wan-Bissaka was the guilty party for United in giving away the penalty from which Salah netted. He hacked down Harvey Elliott and the Liverpool forward – who was summoned from the substitutes bench – jumped straight up to goad his marker following that infringement. It was the decisive exchange in an enthralling 90 minutes.
Mainoo leaves Klopp enraged with Liverpool
Mainoo oozes class and has done so from his first touch in the Premier League only a few months ago.
The teenager also possesses a calmness rarely seen in such young players and that was on full show before, during and after his goal. Mainoo took a touch inside the Liverpool area and curled into the far corner with minimal fuss as he followed it up with an equally cool celebration – saluting United match-goers by the flag.
Jurgen Klopp was simultaneously enraged at his team for giving too much time and space. Mainoo made them pay.
