‘I tried new drink that isn’t alcohol but has similar effect and was amazed after two glasses’

We all know that alcohol is toxic and harms our bodies. Gruelling hangovers serve as a warning sign to us of the harmful effects of the drug.

But, the allure of indulging in a beverage that can alleviate our anxieties and calm our stresses for a few hours often outweighs the negative impacts, even for those who otherwise strive to live a healthy existence. For people who are tired of the struggle between having a good time and respecting their bodies, a new drink has hit the market that is touted as having the positive benefits that alcohol has on the mind without harming the body.

Sentia Spirit impacts the GABA system, the section of brain activity associated with anxiety, stress, and fear, in a similar way to alcohol. Because the effects of this herbal drink are more subtle, you are not left with a horrendous hangover.

Curious to see if the scientific theory lives up to reality, I sampled Sentia to experience the effects for myself. I mixed the Sentia Red with tonic water.

The fruity flavour reminded me slightly of mulled wine, and the drink had a little punch to it. Afterwards, I definitely experienced a soothing effect, similar to drinking a single glass of wine. Me and my partner finished the 20cl bottle in one night – which worked out as around two glasses each – and I felt as fresh as if we’d been drinking herbal tea the following day.

Next, I tried the Sentia Black which had a stronger flavour and went well with ginger beer. This drink had a sharper impact on me and felt more like I had been drinking a spirit like rum. But again, the following day there was not a trace of a hangover.

The drink was created by Bristol doctor Professor David Nutt who was famously dismissed by the government in the 2000s after claiming that alcohol was more harmful than many illegal drugs, including LSD and cannabis.

He’s spent years researching this safer alternative to alcohol and I can assert the Bristolian has not failed in his mission to bring a healthier option to people who want the buzz without the booze.

You can buy two bottles of 20cl red and black for £29. To find out more, click here.
