Sofia Vergara opened up about why her seven-year marriage to Joe Manganiello ended.
Speaking to the Spanish publication El País, the 51-year-old star — who is currently in in Miami — revealed that her 47-year-old ex-husband wanted kids and she did not.
The Colombian-bred beauty said plainly: ‘My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom.’
She explained to the outlet, ‘I feel it’s not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that’s not for me anymore.’
Mentioning her son Manolo from her first marriage to high school sweetheart Joe Gonzalez, she noted, ‘I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children.’
The bombshell America’s Got Talent judge was candid about where she is in life.
‘I’m almost in menopause; it’s the natural way of things,’ she stated.
‘When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life; that’s what I have to do,’ Vergara emphasized.
She and Joe announced their divorce in a joint statement shared with Page Six last July.
They said: ‘We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.’
Only two days after announcing their split, the True Blood actor filed for divorce and listed their date of separation as July 2.
The reason for the end of their marriage was cited as ‘irreconcilable differences.’
In the wake of their separation, Sofia has busied herself with new love interest Justin Saliman, an orthopedic surgeon.
In late October she and the doctor were first spotted together on a night out in West Hollywood.
For his part, Joe has moved on with 34-year-old Winning Time actress Caitlin O’Connor.
Sofia kicked off her week in Miami doing press for her upcoming Netflix limited series Griselda, about Colombian drug cartel leader Griselda Blanco.
During her chat with El País, she said: ‘Griselda was a very badass woman… Women are not saints, [they’re not] perfect.
‘The interesting and complex thing is that this woman had children, friends, employees. She was loyal to some and implacable with others. She degenerated [as a result of] power, fear, ambition and insecurities. Just like a man. No more, no less.’
