Hibs 0 Hearts 1 LIVE reaction as Lawrence Shankland in epic confession after Monty and Co left bereft

Hearts snatched a last-gasp 1-0 victory over Hibernian at Easter Road in an Edinburgh Derby that delivered on high drama, if not on high quality as both sides missed a penalty in the first half of a game that had lacked the X-Factor.

Lawrence Shankland was the man to grab the headlines once again as he shrugged off Rocky Bushiri at the edge of the box before making the space to curl in a fabulous left-footed strike into the top corner in the 92nd-minute to send the away end into raptures.

It hadn’t been the greatest spectacle, with clear-cut chances at a premium, but the Hearts captain stepped up to lead by example and drag his team over the line with his late, late show.

Shankland had missed his first Hearts penalty after 15 consecutive successes in the 6th minute as he sent Hibs goalie David Marshall the wrong way, but struck the bottom of the post after VAR had spotted a Bushiri handball from a corner.

Martin Boyle then had the chance to put the Nick Montgomery’s side in front on 15 minutes after visiting defender Kye Rowles had blocked Hibs’ No. 9 Dylan Vente’s goalbound shot. The Australian stopper was given a yellow card, before his international team-mate was brilliantly denied by Zander Clark, who dived low to his right to tip Boyle’s well-struck effort onto the post.

Clark had kept the scoreline level with a couple of decent saves in the second half as Hibs pushed for a winner, and the Scotland international goalie then provided the assist for Shankland with a long goal-kick that found his captain to score the decisive goal for Steven Naismith’s men.

You can follow all the reaction from what’s been a dramatic Edinburgh Derby night LIVE right here.

Naismith’s delight

Steven Naismith saluted Lawrence Shankland for his game-changing ability as the star striker won the derby.

The Hearts boss – speaking to BBC – lauded his skipper as he pointed all the factors which are on the up.

“The game lacked quality overall, but Lawrence’s quality wins us the game. The most pleasing thing is that we found a way. We’ve done that consistently recently. We’ve built up our clean sheets, built up our away wins, and those things make a difference. We dug right till the very end.

Cochrane’s delight

Alex Cochrane says Lawrence Shankland said sorry for his display but the man of the match doesn’t care after his free-scoring striker found the back of the net, he said to Sky Sports.

Shanks misses his, Zander has come up with the goods for us. Shanks has apologised but as long as he sticks in the top bins it doesn’t really matter. It’s about the team.

Shankland delight

Chuffed Lawrence Shankland admits he owes penalty hero Zander Clark a beer for denying Martin Boyle from the spot after he missed his own spot kick.

And the lethal marksmen won the game in the dying seconds to fire the Jambos clear in third after leaving their rivals reeling again.

A great feeling. I owe Zander a beer for saving that penalty. I didn’t have a great game. Quite a lot of career I have one opportunity and I stick it away. When you have been that bad you smile. Zander had a great save. I am so happy that went in.

FT: Hibernian 0-1 Hearts

Hearts have won the Derby in the most dramatic of fashions as Lawrence Shankland’s 92nd-minute winner sees off Hibs at Easter Road.

Frantic end

Hibs are throwing the kitchen sink at this as Tavares sees his cross blocked out for a throw-in and Hibs send it into the box, before an almighty stramash sees Jeggo’s shot blocked, before Hearts clear it.

GOAL: Hibernian 0-1 Hearts

It’s a dramatic opening goal in the Derby in added time as Lawrence Shankland fights off Bushiri from the long goal-kick from Zander Clark and he works the space for a left-footed shot high into the top corner for a spectacular finish.

Is that the winning goal?

Hibs 0-1 Hearts.

FIVE minutes confirmed

There are FIVE minutes added to the end of this game after the Josh Campbell injury. Can one of the 22 players remaining on the pitch become a hero for their club.

There will be a bit more time added as Beni Baningime receives treatment from the Hearts physios. It appears to be cramp, and he appears keen to carry on.

Hibs sub

Christian Doidge is on for the hosts, replacing Dylan Vente for the final few minutes.

Atkinson booked

Nathaniel Atkinson is booked as he takes out Martin Boyle.

Campbell back in stands

The stricken winger has been pictured in the stand at Easter Road, with his hospital visit delayed as he elects to stay and watch the rest of the Derby.

Hibs free-kick

Miller is brought down on the right-hand side and it’s a chance for a delivery from Newell.

It’s a teasing one that’s cleared to Jeggo, but the sub can’t find the immediate impact off the bench, as he’s hurried into taking his shot, which goes over the bar.

Five to play at Easter Road.

Still Hibs 0-0 Hearts.

Hibs sub

Dylan Levitt is brought off and replaced by Jimmy Jeggo as Nick Montgomery looks to his bench for inspiration.

Shankland denied

Hearts are next to go close as McKay finds Shankland, who again works the opening but it’s straight at Marshall and the chance is gone.

Youan denied

The ball breaks for Elie Youan at the edge of the box, but the French sub is denied by Zander Clark.

It’s a decent enough save from the Hearts keeper, but it was pretty much straight at him.

Hibs 0-0 Hearts.

Boyle teetering

Martin Boyle has a bit of a swipe at fellow Aussie Calem Nieuwenhof, which seems a bit unwise given his caution from a few minutes ago.

The last thing he needs is to be getting noticed by the ref for a needless challenge.

Corner to Hearts

Another chance for Hearts to load the box, but Fish leaps like a salmon to clear it with another booming header.

Fifteen to play

There’s just over a quarter of an hour to play in the 90 at Easter Road, are we going to find a winner?

Neither side’s had the quality thus far, but it only takes one and it would probably win the Derby the way things have gone.

Big final period for both sides.

Boyle booked for dive

Jair Tavares slips as he crosses from the left, but it almost finds Martin Boyle in the box, who goes down in the vicinity of Frankie Kent and is booked for a dive by John Beaton.

Not sure on that one myself. Looked a bit like a slip, but the ref’s made his mind up and into the book he goes.

Vente denied

It’s Hibs’ turn to break as Youan intercepts and then sends Boyle down the right side of the box. His cut-back finds Vente, who gets his effort on target, but Zander Clark is equal to it and tips it behind.

It’s the second shot on target of this one after 72 minutes.

Campbell taken to hospital

There’s been an update on Josh Campbell’s horror injury, with the Hibs winger taken to hospital to be evaluated.

It looked a really sore one and we can only hope he recovers quickly.

Big chance for Vargas

Lewis Miller plays a slack square pass across the midfield, which Vargas gobbles up, but the sub can’t keep his shot down as it sails over the bar.

That was a real opportunity for the visitors and Miller’s got away with one there.

Still Hibs 0-0 Hearts with just over 68 minutes on the clock.

Hearts corner

The two Hearts subs come close to combining as McKay sends a deep cross to the back post to Vargas, but it’s headed behind for another Hearts corner.

Cochrane sends the set piece too long and it’s a Hibs goal kick.

Levitt into the book

The Welsh midfielder miscontrols a pass into him which allows Hearts sub Vargas to burst away, but not quite clear as the former Dundee United man brings him down for stick-on booking.

Hearts sub

Alan Forrest is brought off on the hour and is replaced by Costa Rican attacker Kenneth Vargas.

Newell tries it out

The Hibs captain tries a deft flick over the top at the set piece, but it’s turned behind for a corner.

That would have been some chance had it come off.

Free-kick for Hibs

Calem Nieuwenhof goes into the book as he practically rips Dylan Vente’s shirt off.

The set piece is about 25 yards from goal, in line with just left of the D.

Youan putting on the style

Hibs sub Elie Youan has absolutely done Stephen Kingsley twice in a matter of moments, as he spins around his man and then nutmegs him for good measure, before gee-ing up the supporters, who are loving the borderline wind-up.

Atkinson blazes over

The ball’s worked into the box from the Hearts left as Forrest attempts to tee up Cochrane, but it falls for Atkinson, who smashes it over the bar.

Campbell concern

Hibernian’s Josh Campbell (C) is stretchered off

Josh Campbell has collided with Dylan Levitt as Baningime left them both in his wake and the 23-year-old immediately signals to the bench that he’s taken a sore one.

He’s being stretchered off here and we can only hope it’s not too serious and he can make a speedy recovery.

He’s replaced by Elie Youan, the 83-second double hero from the last Derby.

Brilliant Baningime

Hibernian’s Dylan Levitt tries to win the ball from Hearts’ Beni Baningime

Beni Baningime does excellently to juke and weave away from some heavy Hibs attention and the former Everton player sends a through-ball in behind for Shankland, but he’s unable to catch up to it and the chance is gone.

McKay Marshalled

Substitute Barrie McKay is straight in on the action as he hits the byline to cross, but it’s plucked with relative ease by David Marshall.

Second half kicks off

Hibs get the second half underway as they look to get their noses in front. Can Hearts send the away end wild in what remains? We’ll find out soon enough.

Teams back out

The teams are back out as we get set for the second half of this latest Edinburgh Derby. Kick-off is next.

Hearts change

Barrie McKay is on for the second half for the visitors as he replaces Aidan Denholm in the half-time interval.

HT: Hibernian 0-0 Hearts

Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland hits the post from the penalty spot

It’s been an absorbing first half at Easter Road, without too many clear-cut chances aside from a missed penalty apiece.

Lawrence Shankland sent the keeper the wrong way but struck the post while at the other end Martin Boyle’s spot-kick also found the post, but via the brilliant outstretched glove of Zander Clark.

Hibernian 0-0 Hearts.

One minute added

It’s been an all-action first half and it will be over in a minute as that’s all the time added to the first half.

Shankland over the top

The Hearts captain is free from a big booming clearance over the top and he does well to find space for the shot from the left corner of the box, but it’s a tough chance and the Scotland international puts it over the bar.

Bushiri wide

It’s a well-worked short corner as it’s worked from Newell to Levitt and the Welsh midfielder’s dinked cross to the back stick finds Bushiri, but the big defender can only skew his effort wide.

Beaton block

Joe Newell goes to send a long pass downfield which cannons off of referee John Beaton and results in a dropped ball.

Play resumes.

Hearts corner

Alan Forrest gets down the line again and this time his cross is put behind by Fish.

The Hearts wide man is getting some decent space to operate down the left hand side, but has been unable to put a really telling ball into the area with any consistency so far.

The set piece comes to nothing as Hibs get it clear.

Fish almost chips in Vente

It’s a great ball over the top by Will Fish as Hibs try and go from back to front – as the big defender sends one towards Vente, but it’s just too long for the striker, who can’t control it and it goes through to Clark.

Quality street?

Erm, not quite!

Yes the pulses were raised in the first 20 minutes with the missed penalties, however, the attacking intent from both since has been a hard watch.

Let’s hope for more as the game progresses.

The story in full

The Scottish Football Association blasted back in the row over the plug being pulled on Hibs boss Nick Montgomery being mic’d up by Sky Sports for the Edinburgh derby.

The broadcasters had agreed a deal with Hibs and Hearts to go behind the scenes in the clash – with armchair viewers set to hear from the Hibs boss during the game as well as getting a pitch side view from a body cam pinned on coach Sergio Raimundo.

But Hampden chief executive Ian Maxwell stepped in at the last minute to block the bid – insisting the move was against the rules. Record Sport columnist and Sky pundit Chris Sutton branded the decision an embarrassment while Kris Boyd insisted the punters were left short changed. Hampden officials insisted they had to pull the mic plan as it was in breach of governing body IFAB’s rules on electronic devices during games.

Another corner for Hibs

Josh Campbell sees his effort diverted behind for another Hibs corner after Boyle had cleverly found him.

Joe Newell takes this one, but Bushiri heads over.

Still Hibs 0-0 Hearts.

Corner for Hibs

Frankie Kent diverts a Hibs cross out for a corner, which Boyle will take from the left hand side, just shy of 29 minutes on the clock.

The delivery is decent, but it’s cleared by the Hearts backline.

Big chance for Hibs

Jair Tavares does well to work the space for the cross from the left which finds Vente, but the striker’s a bit off-balance as he headers it, against Atkinson. The crowd are shouting for another penalty, but there’s no chance in this instance.

It hits the arm, but it’s down at his side and he’s jumping so no penalty.

That was a big opportunity for a striker of Vente’s quality.

Rocky cuts it out

Clark tries to send Forrest from a long kick out and it nearly works before Rocky Bushiri gets across to send it out for a throw-in.

Hearts corner

Shankland plays a delightful ball in behind for Forrest, who gets to the byline but his cross is blocked by Lewis Miller.

Boyle cross cut out

It’s a superb run down the right from Martin Boyle and the Aussie international sends a tantalising low cross to the back post, which is cut out superbly by his international team-mate Nathaniel Atkinson for a corner.

Absolute cinch

This is bonkers and we can only drink in the drama.

Imagine the mic was on Monty? This game would end up for a BAFTA.

A classic Scottish drama, so far!
