GTA Online has been nominated for an award in The Game Awards.
The Game Awards is the most popular ceremony that celebrates games in the past 12 months. This event also reveals new games, trailers, updates and more.
Over thirty categories are part of this year’s awards show which takes place on December 7th. Fans have been able to vote in these categories for a couple of weeks. Both the fan vote and jury vote are combined to find the winner.
The jury is made up of over a hundred ” jury of over 100 global media and influencer outlets“. These include websites such as Game Informer, IGN, Variety, Wired, Eurogamer and more spanning several countries.
GTA Online’s nomination
Rockstar Games did not release a new game this year therefore it had no game eligible for any category except one: on-going game, which it was not nominated for. However, a new category was announced on Monday titled “Player’s Voice”. This award is a pure fan vote and no jury will be part of it. Fans can vote for up to 10 of the 28 pre-selected games.
GTA Online was nominated as it is an on-going powerhouse and it faces stiff competition from newly released titles. This nomination comes 10 years since the launch of GTA Online. You can vote for GTA Online here.
GTA V won Game of the Year and Best Soundtrack in 2013 during the previous iteration of The Game Awards.
Rockstar Games’ involvement in TGA
The Game Awards has an advisory board of various members who “help guide and advance the mission of the game awards”. They are not part of the nomination or voting process however.
Most members of this panel are individual people such as Hideo Kojima (Game Designer) and Phil Spencer (Microsoft Gaming CEO). However, Rockstar Games as an entity are on this advisory board along with Valve, Sony, and Epic Games.
Some people have used this as fuel for their pure speculation on GTA 6’s trailer being revealed on The Game Awards livestream. Rockstar Games have been on the advisory board and its webpage for several years now. It has nothing to do with GTA 6.
The Game Awards will be live on the official YouTube and Twitch channels from 4:30pm PT, 7:30pm ET, and Dec 8th 12:30am GMT.
